Stop Wrestling With That Box

You ordered a nice BBQ. What arrived was a box of parts and instructions that seem to be translated from Chinese via Google. Life's too short.

💡 Pro tip: BBQs at the budget end often have missing or wrong parts. Having someone who's done loads of them before saves hours of frustration.

Why Pay Someone To Build Your BBQ?

Because you want to use it this weekend, not spend your Saturday swearing at wonky legs and stripped screws.

What to Expect

Step 1: Check Parts

I'll unbox everything, lay out the parts, and check against the instructions. If anything's obviously missing, I'll let you know before starting.

Step 2: Assemble

Follow the instructions (when they make sense), build it square and stable, all fixings properly tightened.

Step 3: Test & Position

For gas BBQs, I'll connect the regulator and check for leaks. Then position it where you want it, test the wheels work, and it's done.

🔧 DIY Tips

Want to tackle it yourself? Fair enough:

🔧 Tools you'll need

  • Screwdriver set (Phillips and flat)
  • Adjustable spanner or socket set
  • Allen keys (usually included but often rubbish quality)
  • Pliers
  • Soapy water in a spray bottle (for gas leak testing)

📐 Assembly tips

  1. Lay out ALL parts first and check against the parts list
  2. Read through the entire instructions before starting
  3. Don't fully tighten anything until the whole frame is together
  4. Build on a flat surface - wonky ground = wonky BBQ
  5. Have a second person to help hold larger panels
  6. Keep the allen key - you'll need it for future adjustments

🔥 Gas BBQ specifics

  • Hand-tighten the regulator - no tools needed
  • Connect to gas bottle
  • Open gas, DON'T light yet
  • Spray all connections with soapy water
  • Bubbles = leak, tighten and retest
  • No bubbles = you're good to light

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Following the instructions blindly when they're clearly wrong
  • Fully tightening as you go - then nothing lines up later
  • Not checking parts before starting
  • Building on uneven ground then wondering why it wobbles
  • Losing the tool kit/spare parts bag

💡 Pro trick: Take photos as you unbox - if parts ARE missing, you've got evidence for the supplier. Also photograph any instructions that make no sense (you'll want to show someone later).

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🔥 First use: New BBQs often have manufacturing oils and residue. Do a 15-minute burn-off on high before cooking anything. Your first burgers will thank you.

Gas bottle? I can check your setup and connections, but you'll need to source your own gas bottle. Most petrol stations and DIY stores do exchanges.

Cover? Seriously worth buying a proper cover - Devon weather will destroy even expensive BBQs in a couple of seasons without protection.

Positioning? Away from fences, overhanging trees, and the house. On level ground. Ideally with access all around so you can use it comfortably. Not under the washing line (trust me on this one).

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a 'simple' BBQ?

Basic kettle BBQs, straightforward gas BBQs with minimal assembly, or simple charcoal barrel types. If it's got a rotisserie, side burner, or comes in 4+ boxes, that's getting into complex territory - call me and we'll discuss it.

Do I need to unbox it first?

No need - I'll unbox it, check all the parts are there (they often aren't!), and get on with it. I'll remove all the packaging too.

What if there are parts missing?

Happens more often than it should, especially with cheaper BBQs. I'll let you know what's missing so you can contact the supplier. Sometimes I can bodge it with similar fixings, sometimes you genuinely need the manufacturer to send the parts.

Will you position it where I want it?

Yes - I'll build it where you want it, or build nearby and move it into position once it's done. Just tell me where it's going.

Can you help with the gas connection?

I can connect the regulator to the bottle and check for leaks with soapy water. For permanent fixed gas lines, you need a Gas Safe engineer - I'm not qualified for that.
