How long does exterior masonry paint last?
Quality masonry paint properly applied lasts 10-15 years in Devon's weather. South-facing walls fade faster from sun exposure, but the protection lasts even if colour fades slightly. North-facing walls stay looking fresh longer but can get more algae growth.
Do I need to empty the room first?
Not completely. Move small stuff out, and I'll move furniture to the middle and cover everything with dust sheets. Heavy wardrobes and beds can stay - I work around them. Less hassle for you, I'm set up to handle it.
Do you sand and fill the skirting boards first?
Absolutely. Sanding smooths the surface and gives the paint something to grip. Any dents, nail holes, or gaps get filled and sanded flush. Skipping this step is why DIY skirting jobs often look rough - you can see every imperfection through the paint.
Does coving always have to be white?
No - most people do paint it white because it blends with the ceiling, but you can paint it the same colour as the walls for a modern look, or even a contrasting colour if you're feeling bold. I've done coving in greys, creams, even dark colours for dramatic rooms. It's your house!
Can you paint over my current colour or does the door need stripping?
Usually can paint over existing paint if it's sound. I sand to key the surface, then undercoat if changing colour drastically (white to black needs coverage). Only strip if paint is completely failed and flaking everywhere - that's rare and I'd quote separately. Most jobs just need good prep.
How do you remove wallpaper without damaging the walls?
Soak it properly first - that's the secret. I score the surface so water penetrates, spray or sponge it thoroughly, let it soak for 10-15 minutes, then scrape carefully with a broad blade. Rushing it or scraping dry paper gouges the plaster underneath. Patience is everything.
