Anyone can open a tin of paint, but proper decorating is about preparation. Filling holes, sanding surfaces, masking edges, priming where needed - this prep work is what separates a professional finish from a DIY disaster. We take time to prepare properly, use quality paints, and deliver clean, lasting results. From single feature walls to complete room makeovers, exterior woodwork to fence treatments.
Why Choose Hembury Contracting?
Sam believes in doing prep work properly. He'll fill, sand, prime and mask before any paint goes on. The result is clean lines, even coverage, and a finish that lasts.

Common Questions About Painting
How long does wallpaper last?
Good quality wallpaper hung properly lasts 10-15 years easily. It'll only need replacing when you want a change, not because it's failed. Main enemies are damp (edges lift) and kids/pets (damage). Kitchen or bathroom feature walls need wipeable or vinyl-coated paper.
Can you paint skirting boards without getting paint on my carpet?
Yes - I use a combination of masking film, cutting-in technique, and a steady hand. If your carpet is really tight to the skirting, I tuck a thin metal shield down the gap as I paint. Been doing this for years - your carpet stays clean.
Will the paint smell up my room?
Modern water-based paints have very low odour - barely noticeable after a few hours. Oil-based paints smell stronger and linger for a day or two. I use water-based unless you specifically want oil-based for its durability. Either way, keep windows open while it dries.
Can you paint over existing fence paint or does it need stripping?
If the old paint is sound (not flaking off), I can paint over it - just needs cleaning and keying. If it's peeling badly, the loose stuff needs removing or the new paint will fail with it. I'll assess honestly what prep is actually needed.
Can you paint uPVC window frames?
Not usually recommended - uPVC doesn't take paint well and it tends to peel. If you really want to change the colour, it needs special uPVC paint and meticulous prep. For wooden frames, no problem - that's standard work.
Do I need to take the door off to paint it?
Not usually. I can paint most doors in place - easier for you, quicker for me. The only exception is if you want both sides doing and the door's heavy or awkward to work around. I'll advise when I see it.
