Your BBQ properly cleaned and degreased so it's ready for the summer. Grill grates scrubbed, burners cleared, grease traps emptied - the works.

Ready For Summer in an Hour

That BBQ's been sat under a cover since September, and you know what's under there. Last year's cremated sausages, solidified grease, and probably a spider hotel.

💡 Pro tip: A clean BBQ heats more evenly, uses less gas, and doesn't fill your burgers with last year's burnt offerings. Worth doing properly.

What Actually Needs Cleaning

It's not just the grill - gas BBQs have multiple bits that affect how they cook.

What to Expect

Step 1: Assessment

I'll have a look at what we're dealing with - check for rust, seized parts, or anything beyond cleaning that needs attention.

Step 2: Strip & Clean

All removable parts come out. Grill grates get a proper scrub. Burners cleared. Grease trap emptied (brace yourself, it's grim). Inside surfaces degreased.

Step 3: Reassemble & Test

Everything goes back together. For gas BBQs, I'll check the burners light evenly and there are no blockages. Quick wipe of the outside and you're done.

🔧 DIY Tips

Want to keep on top of it yourself? Here's how:

🔧 What you'll need

  • Wire grill brush (brass is less harsh than steel)
  • BBQ degreaser or washing up liquid
  • Bucket of hot soapy water
  • Old cloths or kitchen roll
  • Scraper or putty knife
  • Pipe cleaners or thin wire (for burner holes)

🔥 The easy way (do this every time)

  • Heat BBQ for 10 mins after cooking
  • Brush grill grates while still hot
  • That's it - prevents buildup

🧼 The deep clean (once a year minimum)

  1. Let BBQ cool completely
  2. Remove grill grates and flame tamers
  3. Unscrew burners (note which way round they go)
  4. Soak grates in hot soapy water, scrub hard
  5. Clear every burner hole with a pipe cleaner or thin wire
  6. Empty and clean the grease trap (hold your breath)
  7. Scrape carbon off the inside of the lid
  8. Spray everything with degreaser, let it sit, wipe clean
  9. Reassemble everything
  10. Light it up and check all burners work evenly

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Using oven cleaner (too harsh, damages finishes)
  • Leaving burners out in the rain (they'll rust)
  • Not cleaning between the grill grates (filth central)
  • Pressure washer on high (damages burners and electrics)
  • Forgetting the grease trap exists until it overflows

💡 Pro trick: Line the grease trap with foil before the BBQ season - when it's full, just swap the foil out. Saves the grim scrubbing job.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🌡️ Best time: Early spring before you use it, or autumn after the season. Don't wait until 2 hours before your BBQ party.

Cover it up: Even a cheap cover massively reduces how often you need a deep clean. BBQs left uncovered in Devon weather are basically rust farms.

Gas smell? If you smell gas when it's connected but not lit, turn it off and get it checked properly. Could be a loose connection or perished hose - not a cleaning issue.

Rust spots? Small surface rust on grates is fine - clean it off and oil the grates. Rust on burners or through the firebox? Time for replacement parts or a new BBQ.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I get my BBQ cleaned?

Depends how much you use it. Most people benefit from a deep clean once a year at the start of the season. Quick clean after each use (when it's still warm) makes the annual deep clean easier.

Can you clean really neglected BBQs?

I can have a go, but there's a limit. If it's been sat outside uncovered for 3 winters with rust and seized burners, you might be better off buying a new one. I'll be honest about whether it's worth cleaning.

Will cleaning improve how it cooks?

Massively. Blocked burners = uneven heat. Built-up grease = flare-ups and off flavours. Clean BBQ heats evenly, uses less gas, and your food actually tastes better.

Do I need to provide cleaning products?

I'll bring BBQ degreaser and wire brushes. If you've got specific products you want used, let me know.

What about the outside of the BBQ?

I'll wipe down the outside and lid, but this is mainly about getting the cooking surfaces and burners properly clean. If you want a full valet including polishing stainless steel, that'll take longer - let me know.
