Bird feeding station assembled and positioned in your garden, with feeders hung and filled. One-stop setup for attracting multiple bird species to your outdoor space.
Create a Garden Wildlife Hub
A feeding station brings all your bird feeding together in one visible, accessible spot. Better than scattering individual feeders around the garden, and perfect if you don't have trees to hang feeders from.
💡 Pro tip: Position where you can see it from your main living area - half the point is enjoying watching the birds. Kitchen or living room window view is ideal.
Why Professional Setup Helps
A wobbly feeding station = spillage, waste, and eventually the whole thing toppling over in the wind with full feeders on it.
| ✅ Done Right | ❌ Done Wrong |

| Positioned for bird safety and viewing | Too exposed or hidden away |
| All arms/hooks securely attached | Feeders fall off, bend, or break |
| Multiple feeder types hung properly | Wrong feeders for the station style |

Why Choose Us for Bird feeding station in Exeter?
Station assembled properly
Positioned in ideal location
Multiple feeders hung and filled
Stable and secure in ground
What to Expect
Step 1: Assembly
Put the station together - usually a central pole with arms or hooks at different heights. Check all fixings are tight and everything's secure.
Step 2: Positioning
We'll work out the best spot - visible from the house, near some cover for bird safety, away from cat ambush points, and on reasonably level ground.
Step 3: Installation
In soft ground, I'll hammer the stake in firmly. In hard ground or windy locations, a small concreted base is more secure. Make sure it's perfectly upright.
Step 4: Feeders
Hang whatever feeders you want - different types at different heights attracts more species. Fill them and you're ready to go.
🔧 DIY Tips
Want to set up your own feeding station?
🔧 What you'll need
- Bird feeding station kit
- Rubber mallet or hammer
- Spirit level
- Spade (if doing concrete base)
- Concrete mix (optional but recommended)
- Bird feeders and food
🐦 Choosing a station
| Type | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Basic pole with hooks | Small gardens, 2-3 feeders | Cheapest, simple, can be wobbly |
| Multi-arm station | 4-6 feeders, variety | Most popular, good stability |
| Deluxe with tray | Maximum variety including ground feeders | Heavy, needs concrete base |
📐 Setting it up
- Choose your spot (see positioning advice below)
- Assemble the station following instructions
- Mark the ground where it'll go
- For soft ground: hammer stake in firmly, use spirit level to keep vertical
- For hard/exposed ground: dig 30cm hole, position station, backfill with concrete, support until set
- Attach all arms/hooks securely
- Hang feeders at different heights
- Fill with appropriate food types
📍 Positioning advice
- Visibility: Where you'll see it from indoors
- Safety: 2-3m from cover (shrubs/trees) - close enough to escape, far enough from cats
- Access: Easy to reach for refilling
- Ground: Reasonably level, not in a boggy hollow
- Not right under trees (squirrel highway) or next to fences (cat launching pad)
⚠️ Common mistakes
- Just hammering into ground without concrete in exposed spots (blows over)
- Too many feeders on one side (unbalanced, tips)
- Positioning in deep shade (birds prefer some light)
- Right next to hedge (cat ambush territory)
- Too far from house (can't see the birds)
💡 Pro trick: Before you concrete anything in, live with it for a few days just hammered in. Make sure birds actually use that spot and you can see them from where you sit. Then make it permanent.
Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.
Good to Know
🌳 No perfect spot? Compromise between bird safety and your viewing pleasure. Birds will use feeders even in less-than-ideal spots if they're hungry.
How many feeders? Start with 3-4 different types: seed mix, sunflower hearts, peanuts, and fat balls. Add more if you get lots of bird traffic.
Ground mess: Inevitable with feeding stations - discarded shells, dropped seed, bird droppings. Put a piece of old carpet or board underneath to make cleaning easier, or position somewhere this doesn't matter.
Squirrels: If squirrels are rampant, consider a squirrel baffle (cone guard) on the pole, or a weight-activated feeder that closes under their weight. Complete squirrel-proofing is basically impossible though.
Seasonal changes: Move it slightly in autumn - same general area but different spot prevents disease buildup from droppings. Also gives grass underneath a chance to recover.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a bird feeding station?
It's basically a pole with multiple arms/hooks so you can hang several feeders in one spot - seed feeders, peanuts, fat balls, water. Means you attract more bird species without needing trees to hang feeders from.
Do I need to provide the station or can you get it?
Either way works. If you've bought one already, I'll assemble and position it. If not, let me know what you want and I can pick one up from the garden centre - just add the cost to the labour.
Where should it be positioned?
Visible from the house (you want to enjoy watching), near cover but not right under it (birds need quick escape routes from predators), and away from fences where cats can jump from. I'll advise on the best spot in your garden.
How do you secure it?
Most stations have a stake that hammers into the ground. In soft soil that's fine. In harder ground or exposed spots, I'll dig a small hole and concrete it in for stability - wind can catch multiple full feeders and topple the whole thing.
Can you fill the feeders too?
Yes - if you've got the bird food, I'll hang and fill whatever feeders you want on the station. If you're buying feeders separately, I can advise on the best mix.
