Sam clearing autumn leaves at a thatched cottage in Devon

Autumn leaves cleared from your lawn, paths, borders, and anywhere else they've piled up. All bagged and taken away, leaving your garden tidy and your lawn able to breathe again.

When Autumn Dumps Leaves Everywhere

Trees are beautiful until they dump half their leaves in your garden and you're looking at a thick blanket covering everything. Your lawn, the path, in the gutters, everywhere.

Left too long and your grass underneath goes yellow and dies, paths get dangerously slippery, gutters overflow. But clearing them yourself is back-breaking work and where do you even put that many bags?

💡 Pro tip: Thick leaf coverage blocks light and air from reaching grass. Leave it for more than a couple of weeks and you'll have dead patches that need repairing come spring. Better to clear it while leaves are still manageable.

🔧 DIY Tips

Want to manage autumn leaves yourself? Here's how:

🔧 Tools that help

  • Leaf blower/vacuum (makes life much easier)
  • Spring-tine rake (flexible tines don't damage grass)
  • Garden bags or tarp
  • Gloves
  • Optional: lawn mower with collection box

🍂 Clearing technique

  1. Pick a dry day if possible - wet leaves are heavy and stick
  2. Blow/rake into piles first
  3. Collect piles onto tarp or into bags
  4. Don't overfill bags - you need to be able to lift them
  5. Check hidden areas (behind bins, under bushes)

🚜 Using a mower

  • Run mower over leaves with box attached
  • Chops and collects in one go
  • Only works on relatively dry leaves
  • Needs emptying frequently - leaves fill box fast
  • Doesn't work on thick or wet coverage

⚠️ Common DIY mistakes

  • Trying to clear when soaking wet - exhausting and messy
  • Not checking gutters - biggest cause of overflow problems
  • Leaving thick piles thinking they'll blow away - they won't
  • Overfilling bags - too heavy to move
  • Forgetting corners and hidden areas

💡 Pro trick: If you've got the space, make leaf mould. Bag oak or beech leaves, add a bit of water, tie up and forget for a year or two. Best compost/soil improver you can get and totally free. Don't mix with other leaves though - just oak and beech work well.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🍃 Leaf timing: Different trees drop at different times. Silver birch early October, oak holds on until November, some trees still dropping in December. You might need 2-3 clears through autumn to stay on top of it. Or just call when you've had enough.

Light coverage OK: A light scattering of leaves on lawn is fine and will break down naturally. It's when you can't see grass through them that they need clearing.

Compost them? Oak and beech make good leaf mould. Other leaves can go in compost but take ages to break down. Most people prefer them gone rather than finding space to compost them.

Gutters while we're at it: Blocked gutters cause way more damage than messy lawns. If you want gutters checked and cleared while I'm doing leaf collection, let me know - makes sense to do both.

Devon's wet autumns: Our Exeter weather means leaves often get wet and stuck down pretty quick. Try to clear them before they've been rained on repeatedly - much easier dry than wet. But we'll clear them either way, wet just takes longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why bother clearing leaves - don't they just blow away?

They blow from next door's garden into yours! But seriously, thick leaf coverage kills grass underneath, makes paths slippery and dangerous, blocks drains and gutters. A light scatter is fine, but proper autumn leaf fall needs clearing or you'll have dead lawn patches and drainage problems come spring.

What do you do with all the leaves?

Bag them up and take away for proper disposal. Some go to green waste, some to composting facilities. If you want them for your own compost that's fine - oak and beech leaves make excellent leaf mould. Most people prefer them gone though.

How long does leaf clearing take?

Depends how many leaves and how big your garden. Small garden might be an hour, larger garden with lots of trees could be 2-3 hours. Wet leaves stuck to everything take longer than dry ones you can sweep easily. I'll estimate based on your garden.

Is it just a one-time autumn job?

Most gardens need 2-3 goes through autumn as different trees drop at different times. Early November, late November, then a final clear in December usually covers it. Or you can just call when you've had enough of looking at them.

Can you clear leaves from gutters too?

Yes - that's often part of the job. Blocked gutters overflow, cause damp, and can damage fascias. While I'm clearing garden leaves, makes sense to check and clear gutters at the same time. Let me know if you want that included.
