Large plant pots and containers moved wherever you need them. No back strain for you, no cracked pots, plants kept happy.

Some Pots Are Just Too Heavy

You bought that gorgeous big terracotta pot, filled it with soil and a small tree, watered it thoroughly. Now it weighs as much as a teenager and you need it moved three metres to the left.

This is not a job to attempt solo. Every year people hurt their backs, smash expensive pots, or crush their prize plants trying to shift heavy containers.

Or you just call me and it's done in 20 minutes.

💡 Pro tip: Large pots full of wet soil weigh WAY more than you think. A seemingly manageable terracotta pot can easily be 80-100kg when planted up. That's not a one-person lift.

It's Not Just Pots

While I'm there shifting heavy containers, people often ask about:

  • Patio furniture repositioning
  • Stone ornaments that have been "there forever"
  • Water features that need moving
  • Garden benches going into winter storage

All the heavy garden stuff that accumulates and needs shifting seasonally - I can help with that.

What to Expect

Step 1: Assess the Move

I'll look at what needs moving, where it's going, and what route we're taking. Sometimes the direct route involves steps or tight squeezes - I'll figure out the safest approach.

Step 2: Protect Surfaces

If we're moving stuff across decking, paving, or anywhere that scratches easily, I'll use sliders or protective materials underneath. No point saving your back but ruining your patio.

Step 3: Move Everything

Lift, carry, slide, or carefully tip - whatever works for each pot. You direct where they're going, I do the heavy work. We can fine-tune positioning until you're happy.

🔧 DIY Tips

Determined to do it yourself? Here's how to move heavy pots safely:

🔧 Equipment that helps

  • Heavy-duty furniture sliders (the felt-bottom type)
  • Sack truck / hand trolley for wheeled movement
  • Thick gloves (terracotta edges are sharp)
  • Old carpet offcuts for dragging across surfaces
  • A strong friend (seriously - don't solo lift heavy stuff)

📦 Techniques for moving heavy pots

Sliding method (best for short distances on smooth surfaces)

  1. Tip pot slightly to one side
  2. Slide furniture slider underneath
  3. Rock pot back to standing
  4. Repeat for other side
  5. Now it slides easily across paving/decking

Sack truck method (for longer distances)

  1. Tip pot back against sack truck
  2. Strap it on if possible
  3. Wheel to new location
  4. Carefully tip upright

Two-person carry (through tight spaces)

  1. Both people lift from the base, not the rim
  2. Communicate - count "1, 2, 3, lift"
  3. Take small steps
  4. Put it down if you need to adjust grip

⚠️ Don't do this

  • Lift solo anything over 25kg - you'll hurt yourself
  • Grab pots by the rim - they crack or your hands slip
  • Drag directly on nice surfaces - you'll scar them
  • Rush it - slower is safer
  • Try to "just quickly shift it" without help

💡 Pro trick: For very heavy pots on grass, wait until after rain when the ground is soft. You can sometimes walk them on their edge by rocking them like a wheel. Only works on forgiving surfaces though - don't try it on paving.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🌱 Seasonal moves: Some plants prefer sun in spring but shade in high summer. If you're the type to shift pots seasonally, consider getting pot feet or keeping them on wheeled bases - makes future moves easier.

Got a pot that's staying put? If you're moving pots to find the perfect spot and one's staying there permanently, I can help you set it up on pot feet or a proper base so it drains properly and doesn't stain the patio.

Multiple jobs? If I'm shifting heavy pots, it's often worth having me do other heavy garden tasks the same visit - moving that awkward garden bench, repositioning the bird bath, shifting bags of compost. One callout, multiple jobs done.

Frequently Asked Questions

How heavy a pot can you move?

Most large garden pots when full of wet soil are 50-100kg easily. I can move anything up to about 150kg solo, heavier than that we might need to partially empty it first or get a second pair of hands. The issue is usually manoeuvring them through tight spaces rather than pure weight.

Will you damage my plants?

I'm careful with them. Obviously if we're shifting a massive pot through a narrow gateway something might get bent, but I'll talk you through any risks first. Most moves are straightforward - just heavy lifting with a bit of care.

Can you move them up or down steps?

Yes, within reason. A few steps is fine. Full flights of stairs to different levels gets tricky with really heavy pots - sometimes we need to consider whether it's better to empty them, move the pot, and refill on site.

What about moving pots on decking without scratching it?

I use furniture sliders or old bits of carpet to slide them rather than dragging directly on the wood. Saves your decking from getting scored. Takes a bit longer but it's worth it.

I want to rearrange my whole patio - can you help with that?

Absolutely. Sometimes moving one big pot turns into 'while you're here can you shift these three and swap those two around'. That's fine - I charge by time so we just keep going until you're happy with the layout. Most patio rearrangements are 1-2 hours total.
