Lawn scarifying in Exeter

Scarifying is basically giving your lawn a really aggressive rake - we're pulling out all the accumulated dead grass, moss, and organic debris (called thatch) that builds up over time and chokes your lawn. It looks brutal, but it works.

Why Scarify?

Over time, lawns build up a layer of dead material at the surface. A thin layer is fine, but when it gets thick it stops water, air, and nutrients reaching the roots. Moss creeps in, grass gets weak and patchy. Scarifying strips that out and gives the grass a fighting chance.

The Process

We use a powered scarifier - basically a machine with vertical blades or tines that dig into the lawn surface and pull up all the dead material. It's aggressive, and your lawn will look worse before it looks better. But within a few weeks, you'll see thicker, healthier growth.

💡 Pro tip: Scarify in autumn, then overseed the bare patches. Autumn rain helps new grass establish before winter, and you'll have a thick lawn come spring. Spring scarifying works too, but autumn is ideal.
