Mattress flipped or rotated to spread wear evenly and extend its life. No back strain, no awkward lifting - we'll handle the heavy work and get your bed made up again after.

When Your Mattress Needs Turning

You know you're supposed to flip the mattress. The label says "rotate every 3 months" or something like that. You've been meaning to do it for... 18 months now.

The thing weighs a tonne. Your bedroom's cramped. Your back's not great. It keeps getting postponed.

Meanwhile, your side of the bed is getting that telltale dip in it.

💡 Pro tip: A decent mattress costs £500-£1500. Regular flipping/rotation can extend its life by 3-5 years. That's a lot of value from a 20-minute task you should do twice a year.

What to Expect

Step 1: Access the Mattress

I'll strip the bedding off (or work around it if you prefer), and move the bed from the wall if needed to get proper access.

Step 2: Flip or Rotate

I'll check your mattress type (one-sided or double-sided), then either flip it over or rotate 180°, whichever it's designed for.

Step 3: Check Condition

While I'm handling it, I'll check for any issues - sagging, damage to the cover, stains, wear patterns. Let you know if anything looks concerning.

Step 4: Make the Bed

Bed pushed back into place, mattress protector and sheets back on if you want it made up. Otherwise I'll leave the bedding for you to sort.

🔧 DIY Tips

Want to handle mattress flipping yourself? Here's how to do it without injury:

🔧 Before you start

  • Clear the area around the bed (trip hazards = bad when carrying heavy things)
  • Get a partner to help (seriously, don't solo this)
  • Remove ALL bedding first (easier to grip the mattress)
  • Check what type of mattress you have

🛏️ One-sided vs two-sided mattresses

  • One-sided (modern): Only rotate 180° (head becomes foot). DO NOT flip over.
  • Two-sided (traditional): Can rotate AND flip. Do both.
  • Not sure? Check the label on the mattress or look for one "nice" side and one basic underside.

💪 Flipping safely

  1. Two people always (modern mattresses are 20-40kg)
  2. Lift with legs, not back (bend your knees!)
  3. Stand on opposite sides of the bed
  4. Lift one side and lean mattress against wall if needed
  5. Flip over and lower back down
  6. Rotate 180° to complete the process

🔄 Just rotating (easier)

  1. Stand at opposite ends of the bed (head and foot)
  2. Slide mattress 45° to corner
  3. Rotate so head becomes foot
  4. Slide back into place

⚠️ When NOT to DIY

  • You're home alone (need two people really)
  • You've got back problems
  • The mattress is king/super king (very heavy)
  • It's memory foam (extra heavy, awkward)
  • Your bedroom's tiny (need space to manoeuvre)

💡 Pro trick: Put a reminder in your phone for every 3-6 months. "Rotate mattress" becomes one of those tasks you actually remember to do. Or book me as a regular service - spring and autumn mattress rotation, same time every year.

Better long-term solution:

  • Some modern mattresses don't need flipping (check yours)
  • Mattress protector reduces wear and staining
  • Rotating is easier than flipping (one-sided mattresses)
  • If your mattress is knackered, no amount of flipping will fix it

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🛏️ Whole house job? If you want all the mattresses in the house done (kids' beds, spare room, your room), I'll do them all in one visit. More efficient than multiple trips, and you'll have everything sorted in one go.

Regular service: Some customers book me seasonally - April and October mattress rotation for the whole house. Reminder goes in the diary, job gets done, mattresses last longer. Costs less than replacing them early.

Mattress protectors: While I'm flipping your mattress, it's a good time to fit a waterproof protector if you haven't got one. Protects against spills, sweat, allergens. Worth doing while the bed's stripped anyway.

Is your mattress done for? If flipping reveals serious sagging, permanent dips, or broken springs, I'll let you know honestly. Some mattresses are beyond help and need replacing - no point throwing good money after bad.

Exeter's older houses often have awkward staircases and small bedrooms. If you bought your mattress before moving in and now can't figure out how it even fits in the room, you're not alone. I'm used to working in tight Victorian and Edwardian spaces - no bedroom too cramped.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do mattresses need flipping?

You sleep in the same spot every night, which compresses that area. Flipping or rotating spreads the wear evenly, which extends the mattress life by years. Most manufacturers recommend it every 3-6 months.

What's the difference between flipping and rotating?

Rotating means turning 180° (head becomes foot). Flipping means turning over (top becomes bottom). Modern mattresses are often one-sided (can't flip), but all mattresses benefit from rotation. I'll check your mattress type and do whichever it needs.

Can't I just do this myself?

You could, but modern mattresses are heavy (20-40kg for a double, more for king/super king), and awkward to manoeuvre in a bedroom. Easy to strain your back or damage the mattress. Especially tricky if you've got limited space around the bed.

Will you move the bed as well?

If needed, yes - some beds need pulling out from the wall to access the mattress properly. I'll move it back after and make sure everything's lined up nicely.

How often should I have my mattress flipped?

Every 3-6 months is ideal, depending on the mattress type. I can set reminders if you want this as a regular service - some customers book me seasonally (spring and autumn mattress flip).
