What to Expect

Step 1: Bring Original

You bring me the key you want copied. Make sure it actually works in your lock - no point copying a dud.

Step 2: Cut Duplicate

I cut your new key(s) using the original as the template.

Step 3: Test & Check

Test each key in a practice lock to ensure it turns smoothly, then you check it's definitely for the right door before leaving.

🔧 DIY Tips

Key cutting isn't really a DIY job (you need the specialist machine), but here's what to know:

📐 When getting keys cut

  • Bring the original that works best (if you've got multiple)
  • Tell me what lock it's for (front door, back door etc) so I can label it
  • If original is very worn, consider getting new locks instead
  • Test the copy in your actual lock as soon as you get home

⚠️ Things to watch for

  • Worn original keys make poor copies
  • Very cheap blanks sometimes don't last
  • Not all blanks fit all locks - bring original to match
  • If lock is stiff, adding more keys won't fix it

💡 Pro trick: Get spare keys cut before you need them urgently. Much less stressful than rushing around when you've locked yourself out.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🎨 Just moved house? Get spare keys cut for all your doors and give sets to trusted family/neighbors. Saves you if you ever get locked out.

Color-coded keys? Most key blanks come in different colors - useful for identifying which key is which at a glance. Red for front door, blue for back, etc.

Master key systems? If you've got a master key system (one key opens multiple locks), come and talk to me about it first - copying needs to be done carefully to maintain the system.

Lost all your keys? Can't cut copies if you've got no original - you'll need locks changed and new keys cut from scratch. Different job.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of keys can you cut?

Standard house keys (Yale-type and mortice), most car keys (not the fancy electronic ones), padlock keys, shed keys - basically anything that's a simple metal key. I can't do electronic car fobs or high-security keys that need programming, but your standard keys are fine.

Do I need to bring the original key?

Yes - I need the original to copy from. Make sure it works in your lock before bringing it, otherwise the copy won't work either. If your original key's worn or damaged, sometimes better to get a new barrel and keys rather than copying a dodgy one.

Can you cut keys for all my doors at once?

Absolutely - if you want spare sets for your whole house, bring all the originals and I'll cut the lot. Much quicker doing them all in one go than separate trips. Useful for giving family members or lodgers their own set.

How long does key cutting take?

About 5-10 minutes per key once I've got the machine set up. So if you want 3 keys cut, allow 15-20 minutes total. I test each key to make sure it's cut correctly before you leave.

Will the copied key work as well as the original?

Yes - if it's cut properly from a good original, the copy should work just as smoothly. I test them in a practice lock to check they turn freely. If your original's very worn, the copy will be better because it's cut from the original measurements not the worn edges.
