Typical Duration

30-45 mins

Location

Exeter, Devon

Plant supports installed properly in borders or fixed to walls. Stakes, cages, trellises, and climbing frames fitted securely so your plants actually stay upright through the growing season.

Stop Plants Flopping Everywhere

Got tomatoes sprawling on the ground? Roses collapsing under their own weight? Climbers that aren't climbing? You need proper support installed where plants need it.

💡 Pro tip: Install supports BEFORE plants get massive. Trying to wrestle a 6-foot tomato plant into a cage without breaking half the stems is no fun for anyone.

What to Expect

Step 1: Work Out What's Needed

I'll check where supports need to go and make sure I've got the right fixings for your wall type or ground conditions.

Step 2: Install the Supports

Stakes get hammered in deep and straight. Wall fixings get proper plugs and screws. Everything goes in solid.

Step 3: Check It's Secure

Give everything a good tug to make sure it won't pull out when plants get heavy or windy weather hits.

🔧 DIY Tips

Want to have a go yourself? Here's how to get good results:

🔧 Tools you'll need

  • Lump hammer or mallet
  • Spirit level
  • Drill with masonry bit (for walls)
  • Screwdriver or impact driver
  • Wall plugs and screws

📏 Getting stakes in straight Use a spirit level to check vertical before hammering fully in. Wonky stakes look rubbish and don't support as well.

🔨 Installation technique

  1. For stakes: Drive at least 30cm into ground (more for tall plants)
  2. For wall trellis: Fix with spacers 3-4cm off wall
  3. Use proper wall plugs for your wall type
  4. Check it's level before fixing permanently
  5. Make sure fixings can handle the weight

⚠️ Common DIY mistakes

  • Not going deep enough with stakes
  • Mounting trellis flat against wall (plants can't climb)
  • Using screws too short for the weight
  • Putting supports in after plants are already massive
  • Forgetting walls need different fixings than wood

💡 Pro trick: For really heavy climbing plants, use multiple fixing points spread across the trellis. Don't rely on just the corners - those bottom screws take all the weight.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🎨 Planning ahead? If you're having other garden work done, get supports installed at the same time. Makes sense while I'm already there with tools out.

Got loads of plants needing support? We can do a whole batch in one visit - more efficient and you'll save on the callout.

Brick or stone walls? No problem. I've got the right drill bits and fixings for Exeter's mix of Devon stone, brick, and render. Each wall type needs different treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of plant supports can you install?

Pretty much anything - bamboo canes, metal stakes, tomato cages, obelisks, arches, wall trellis, you name it. If it needs hammering in, screwing to a wall, or assembling in the garden, I can sort it.

Do I need to buy the supports first?

Either way works. If you've already got them, great - I'll install what you've bought. If you're not sure what you need, I can advise and pick something up from the garden centre.

Can you attach trellis to my brick wall?

Yes - I'll fix it properly with wall plugs and screws, usually with spacers behind so the plant can actually climb. Just sticking it straight on the wall doesn't work well - plants need room to twist around.

How long does it take?

Simple stakes or cages in the ground - 30 minutes. Wall trellis or bigger structures like arches take longer, maybe 45 minutes to an hour. I'll give you a time when I know what you need.

Will it be strong enough for heavy plants?

Yes - I'll make sure it's in deep enough and secured properly. Nothing worse than spending money on supports that fall over in the first bit of wind. Properly installed, they'll handle whatever grows on them.
