Painting
Fresh paint transforms a space. Quality decorating with proper preparation for lasting results.
32 services available across Exeter and surrounding areas.

Anyone can open a tin of paint, but proper decorating is about preparation. Filling holes, sanding surfaces, masking edges, priming where needed - this prep work is what separates a professional finish from a DIY disaster. We take time to prepare properly, use quality paints, and deliver clean, lasting results. From single feature walls to complete room makeovers, exterior woodwork to fence treatments.
Why Choose Hembury Contracting?
Sam believes in doing prep work properly. He'll fill, sand, prime and mask before any paint goes on. The result is clean lines, even coverage, and a finish that lasts.

Common Questions About Painting
Can you strip painted-over wallpaper?
Yes, but it's more work. The paint seals the paper so water can't penetrate easily. I score it heavily so the stripper can get through, then use stronger solution and more elbow grease. Takes maybe 50% longer than un-painted paper.
Do you paint them in place or remove them?
Almost always in place - removing railings is a faff and often damages the fixings. I mask off the surroundings and paint carefully. Only time I'd recommend removal is if they're literally falling apart and need refitting anyway.
Can you paint render on my older Exeter house?
Absolutely - but I need to check the condition first. Older renders can have cracks or loose patches that need sorting before painting. If your render is sound, painting it protects it for years. If it's dodgy, painting over problems just hides them until they get worse.
Will my walls be ready to paint or paper straight after stripping?
They need cleaning and checking first. I remove all paste residue and check for damage. Small imperfections get filled. Walls need 24 hours to dry before painting or papering - you can't decorate onto damp plaster.
How many coats of paint do walls need?
Usually two coats. First coat covers and seals, second coat gives proper depth and even colour. Going from dark to light sometimes needs three coats. I'll tell you what's needed when I see your walls and your chosen colour.
Can you match existing colours or do I need to repaint all of them?
I can match colours fairly well, but touching up old faded paint always shows a bit - the new paint is brighter. If your railings are all connected, better to do them all together for consistent colour. If they're separate sections, touching up one section works fine.
