32 services available across Exeter and surrounding areas.

Anyone can open a tin of paint, but proper decorating is about preparation. Filling holes, sanding surfaces, masking edges, priming where needed - this prep work is what separates a professional finish from a DIY disaster. We take time to prepare properly, use quality paints, and deliver clean, lasting results. From single feature walls to complete room makeovers, exterior woodwork to fence treatments.
Why Choose Hembury Contracting?
Sam believes in doing prep work properly. He'll fill, sand, prime and mask before any paint goes on. The result is clean lines, even coverage, and a finish that lasts.

Common Questions About Painting
Can you paint render on my older Exeter house?
Absolutely - but I need to check the condition first. Older renders can have cracks or loose patches that need sorting before painting. If your render is sound, painting it protects it for years. If it's dodgy, painting over problems just hides them until they get worse.
What's the difference between staining and painting a fence?
Stain soaks into the wood and lets you see the grain - it enhances the natural timber look. Paint sits on top and gives solid colour coverage. Stain won't peel or flake like paint can, but it offers slightly less weather protection. For natural-looking fences, stain is better. For full colour coverage, paint wins.
What's the best time of year to paint exterior walls?
Late spring through early autumn is ideal - you need dry weather for at least 24 hours before and after painting. In Devon that's... optimistic. But seriously, I check forecasts and plan around dry spells. Avoid winter if possible - paint won't cure properly in cold, damp conditions.
Can you fix holes in old lath and plaster walls?
Yes, but it's a different technique than modern plasterboard. Lath and plaster holes need more careful filling because there's a void behind. Takes a bit longer but totally doable. Common in older Exeter houses - I deal with it all the time.
How long before I can use the garage again?
You can walk on it after 24 hours. Full cure for driving on takes about 5-7 days. I know that's inconvenient, but cutting it short means the paint won't last. If you absolutely need to use it sooner, we can work out a schedule to do it in sections.
How long before I can use the door after painting?
Touch-dry in a few hours, but I'd avoid closing it properly for 24 hours. Paint needs time to harden or it sticks to the frame. If you need to use the door sooner, I can paint just the outside, let it cure, then do the inside separately.
