Rendered exterior walls painted with proper masonry paint to seal, protect, and refresh the appearance. Surfaces prepared, edges cut in clean, and paint applied for lasting weather protection.

Give Your House a Fresh Face

Painted render transforms how your property looks from the street. One coat of quality masonry paint and suddenly your tired, stained walls look sharp again - weatherproof protection that actually lasts.

💡 Pro tip: Render painting isn't just cosmetic - it seals hairline cracks and creates a barrier against driving rain. Proper prep is what makes the difference between paint that lasts a decade and paint that's peeling in two years.

Why Proper Render Painting Matters

Anyone can roll paint onto render. Getting it to look good and stay good takes proper prep and the right materials.

What to Expect

Step 1: Inspect & Prep

I check the render condition and address any repairs first. Surface gets cleaned and filled where needed - paint won't fix structural problems.

Step 2: Prime (If Needed)

New render or very porous patches get stabilising solution. Keeps the paint from soaking in unevenly.

Step 3: Paint

Two coats of masonry paint applied with roller and brush. Edges cut in clean, full even coverage. Takes longer than you'd think to do it properly.

🔧 DIY Tips

Want to tackle it yourself? Here's how to get decent results:

🔧 Tools you'll need

  • Large masonry roller (not a tiny one - you'll be there forever)
  • Extension pole for the roller
  • Good quality brushes for cutting in
  • Dust sheets and masking tape
  • Pressure washer or stiff brush for cleaning
  • Crack filler and filling knife

🧱 Surface prep

  1. Pressure wash the render to remove dirt, algae, moss
  2. Let it dry completely (couple of dry days minimum)
  3. Fill any cracks with exterior flexible filler
  4. Check for loose render - knock it off if it's coming away
  5. Treat any damp patches - painting over damp just traps it

🎨 Painting technique

  • Use proper breathable masonry paint (Dulux Weathershield, Johnstone's, Crown Painters Choice)
  • Cut in edges first with a brush, then roller the main areas
  • Work in sections, keep a wet edge to avoid marks
  • Two coats minimum - one coat never covers evenly
  • Don't paint in direct sun or if rain is forecast within 24 hours

⚠️ Common DIY mistakes

  • Skipping the clean - paint won't stick to dirty render
  • Using interior paint or cheap masonry paint
  • Painting over damp or damaged render
  • Only doing one coat (always looks patchy)
  • Forgetting to protect windows, doors, and paths

💡 Pro trick: Mist coat very porous or new render first - dilute your paint 10% with water for the first coat. Stops it soaking in and gives a better finish on the top coat.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🎨 Access is everything: Most render painting needs scaffolding or a tower. Factor this into your budget - scaffold hire costs more than the paint job on smaller walls. If you're doing other high-level work (gutters, soffits), get it all done while the scaffold is up.

Multiple walls? Get them all done together if possible - setup time is the same whether I'm painting one wall or four.

Older house with pebbledash or roughcast? No problem. Takes a bit more paint and patience, but the principle's the same. Just needs working into the texture properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between render painting and normal painting?

Render painting needs special masonry paint that's breathable, waterproof, and flexible enough to move with the wall. It also needs more prep work - I check for cracks, loose render, and damp before starting. Can't just slap any old paint on the outside of your house.

Can you paint render on my older Exeter house?

Absolutely - but I need to check the condition first. Older renders can have cracks or loose patches that need sorting before painting. If your render is sound, painting it protects it for years. If it's dodgy, painting over problems just hides them until they get worse.

Do I need to buy the paint?

Either way works. If you've got a specific colour in mind, grab a sample pot first so we can check it in different lights. If not, I can advise on good masonry paints and pick them up. You want proper breathable exterior paint - not all 'masonry paint' is the same quality.

How long will the paint last?

Good masonry paint on well-prepped render should give you 10-15 years. South and west-facing walls take more weather so might need refreshing sooner. I use quality paint that stands up to Devon weather - the cheap stuff fades and flakes within a few years.

Will you do the whole house or just one wall?

Either - whatever you need. Plenty of people just want a tired south wall freshened up, or a gable end that's looking shabby. Doing the whole house obviously takes longer, but you get a complete refresh and all the scaffolding cost is dealt with in one go.
