Complete bathroom sealant renewal - every seal stripped out and replaced with fresh anti-mould silicone. Makes a tired bathroom feel fresh again without the cost of a full refurb.

The Cheapest Bathroom Refresh You'll Get

Mouldy sealant makes even a decent bathroom look grotty and neglected. Fresh white seals around everything transforms the space for a fraction of the cost of new tiles or a full refit. It's basically a bathroom facelift in a couple of hours.

💡 Pro tip: Do a full reseal when you're redecorating the bathroom. The painter can touch up any scuff marks, and everything looks pristine together. Much better than doing it afterwards and having fresh seals with tatty walls.

Why Complete Renewal Makes Sense

You could just do the bath, but if one seal's failed, the others aren't far behind:

What to Expect

Step 1: Strip Everything Out

I go around the bathroom removing every bit of old sealant - bath, shower, basin, any tile joints. All of it comes out. Can't do a proper job sealing over old stuff.

Step 2: Clean All Surfaces

Every surface that's getting sealed gets wiped with methylated spirits to remove soap scum, grease, any residue. Has to be clean and dry for new silicone to stick properly.

Step 3: Apply Fresh Seals

Clean beads of anti-mould silicone go on around everything - bath edges, shower tray, basin, any tile joints. I tool each one smooth as I go, wipe edges clean, move to the next. If there's a bath, I fill it first so it settles under weight before sealing.

🔧 DIY Tips

Full bathroom reseal is definitely doable DIY if you've got patience:

🔧 Tools and materials you'll need

  • Stanley knife and plastic scraper
  • Methylated spirits and cloths
  • 2-3 cartridges of bathroom silicone (better to have spare)
  • Proper cartridge gun (not squeeze tubes)
  • Silicone smoothing tool
  • Masking tape (optional but helpful)
  • Rubber gloves
  • Kitchen paper (lots of it)

💧 The process

  1. Remove all old sealant - tedious but essential, get every bit
  2. Clean everything with meths - soap residue stops silicone sticking
  3. Let it all dry - dampness ruins silicone adhesion
  4. Fill bath if you have one - shower trays can stay empty
  5. Work systematically - do one area at a time, tool it, move on
  6. Don't rush the tooling - silicone skins over fast, get it smooth first time
  7. Leave 24 hours minimum - don't use water on fresh seals

⚠️ Common DIY mistakes

  • Not removing old sealant thoroughly (new won't stick)
  • Trying to do it all at once (silicone skins before you can tool it)
  • Using too much sealant (neat line, not a rope)
  • Not cleaning surfaces properly first
  • Getting impatient and using the shower after 4 hours (needs 24)

💡 Pro trick: Do the least visible areas first (behind toilet, under basin) to practice your technique. By the time you get to the bath (most visible), you'll have the hang of it.

Get the right silicone - needs to say "Anti-Mould Bathroom Silicone" or "Sanitary Silicone". Regular decorators' caulk will go mouldy in weeks. Spend the extra £2 per tube.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🎨 Decorating soon? Get the seals done at the same time as painting. The decorator can work around wet silicone if needed, and any scuffs from fitting get covered by the final coat.

Coloured vs white silicone - white shows less soap scum and hard water marks. Clear looks good initially but shows every water droplet. Black works with dark tiles. Your choice.

Extractor fan broken? Worth fixing. Even the best anti-mould silicone will struggle in a bathroom that's permanently damp. A working extractor makes seals last years longer.

Older bathrooms with lots of joints - Victorian and Edwardian bathrooms often have more areas needing sealing because of how they're built. Might take longer than a modern box-standard bathroom, but the impact's even bigger.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gets resealed in a full bathroom renewal?

Everything with a seal - bath edges, shower tray, basin, any joins between tiles and fittings, around the toilet base if sealed. Basically anywhere water could get behind and cause damage gets fresh silicone.

Can you match the sealant colour to my bathroom?

Yes - silicone comes in white, clear, black, and various colours. Most bathrooms use white, but if you've got dark tiles or want clear around glass, I can do that. Just let me know what you want when booking.

How much mess does resealing make?

Very little. Scraping old sealant creates some debris but I work carefully and clean up as I go. The bathroom's perfectly usable while I work, and totally clean when I'm done. Just can't use bath/shower for 24 hours while silicone cures.

My grout is mouldy too - can you sort that at the same time?

I can reseal around the grout but cleaning or replacing grout is a different job. If the grout's really bad, worth getting a tiler to rake out and regrout first, then I can seal fresh. Or live with it and just get fresh seals - still makes a big difference.

Will fresh sealant stop the black mould coming back?

The anti-mould silicone I use resists mould much better than cheap stuff, but bathroom ventilation matters too. If you've got no window or extractor fan, any sealant will struggle eventually. Keep the room ventilated and the seals should stay clean for years.
