Freshen Up Your Shower in Half an Hour
Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference. A new shower head is one of those jobs - quick to do, instantly noticeable every single day.
💡 Pro tip: A good quality shower head (even a basic one) makes more difference than you'd think. Cheap ones from the supermarket often have poor water distribution and start leaking within months.
Why Get Someone Else To Do It?
Fair question. It's not complicated, but...

| Checked hose connection isn't perished | Old rubber splits under new pressure |
| Tested immediately for leaks | Discover leak when ceiling's already damaged |

🔧 DIY Tips
Want to do it yourself? It's genuinely one of the easier plumbing jobs:
🔧 Tools you'll need
- Adjustable spanner or wrench
- PTFE tape (plumber's tape)
- Old cloth or towel
- Bowl (to catch drips)
🔩 How to do it
- Turn off the shower (you don't need to turn off the water supply)
- Unscrew the old shower head - turn it anti-clockwise
- Check the rubber washer inside - if it's perished, replace it
- Clean the threads on the hose
- Wrap PTFE tape clockwise around the hose threads (3-4 wraps)
- Screw on the new head - hand tight, then a quarter turn with the wrench
- Turn on the shower and check for leaks
⚠️ Common DIY mistakes
- Not using PTFE tape (guaranteed drip)
- Wrapping tape the wrong way (counter-clockwise = useless)
- Over-tightening and cracking the plastic threads
- Ignoring a perished hose (new head won't seal)
💡 Pro trick: If water drips from the connection when you turn the shower on, turn it off and give it another quarter-turn. Still dripping? Redo the PTFE tape with an extra wrap.
Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.
Good to Know
🔧 Combining jobs? If I'm already at yours fixing a tap or doing other plumbing work, adding a shower head swap takes minutes. Mention it when you book.
Old house with weird fittings? Devon's older properties sometimes have non-standard connections. If your shower head has an odd thread, let me know when booking - I might need to bring adapters.
Hose looks dodgy too? If your shower hose is perished, kinked, or crusty with limescale, it's worth replacing at the same time. Adds about £10 for a decent hose and another 5 minutes to the job.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you fit any shower head I buy?
Pretty much, yes. Most shower heads use standard fittings, so as long as you've got a normal shower hose connection, it'll fit. If you're upgrading from a fixed head to a rail-mounted one, that's more work - let me know when you book.
Will a new shower head fix my low pressure?
Not really. Low pressure is usually a system issue (old pipes, gravity-fed tank too low, etc.). A new head can make it feel slightly better, but it won't magically fix the underlying problem. I'll be honest about whether it's worth doing.
Do I need to buy the shower head myself?
Most people do - there's a huge range out there and it's very personal (rainfall, handheld, water-saving, chrome, matte black, etc.). Get what you like, I'll fit it. If you want advice, I'm happy to recommend what works well.
How long does it take?
20-30 minutes, tops. Unscrew old one, check the hose connection, fit new one with fresh PTFE tape, test for leaks. Quick job.
What if it leaks after you fit it?
Shouldn't happen, but if it does I'll come back and sort it. Usually it's just the PTFE tape needing another wrap or the connection being slightly cross-threaded. Easy fix, no charge if it's within a few days.
