Installing kitchen sinks and bathroom basins - fitted securely, all plumbing connected properly, sealed watertight. Old sink removed if needed.

New Sink, Properly Fitted

Whether it's a kitchen sink in a worktop or a bathroom basin, fitting it properly matters. Too loose and it'll move around. Poor sealing and you'll get leaks. Wrong connections and you'll have drips under the sink for months.

I fit sinks regularly - drop-in, undermount, inset, wall-hung. I know which sealants work, which fixings hold, and how to connect it all so it doesn't leak.

💡 Pro tip: When buying a kitchen sink, check it'll fit your base unit. Standard is 600mm base = 1.5 bowl sink. Smaller base unit = you might need a single bowl. Measure before you buy!

What to Expect

Step 1: Remove Old Sink (If Needed)

Disconnect all the plumbing, undo the fixings, lift out the old sink. Check what state the worktop and pipework are in.

Step 2: Fit the New Sink

Cut the worktop hole if needed (or fit into existing hole), secure the sink in place using the right method for the sink type. Make sure it's level and won't move.

Step 3: Connect Everything

Fit the taps, connect hot and cold supply, fit the waste and trap underneath. Run silicone sealant around the edges, test everything thoroughly.

🔧 DIY Tips

This is a medium-difficulty job - definitely doable if you're practical:

🔧 Tools you'll need

  • Jigsaw (if cutting worktop)
  • Drill
  • Adjustable spanners
  • Screwdriver
  • Silicone sealant and gun
  • Spirit level
  • Pencil

🚰 Installing a drop-in sink

  1. Turn off water supply
  2. Remove old sink if replacing
  3. Place template on worktop, mark cutting line
  4. Drill starter hole, cut with jigsaw
  5. Apply silicone bead around underside of sink lip
  6. Lower sink into hole
  7. Fix clips underneath to secure
  8. Connect taps and waste
  9. Connect hot and cold supply
  10. Turn water on, test for leaks

⚠️ Common DIY mistakes

  • Cutting worktop hole too big (sink falls through)
  • Not sealing properly (water gets under sink, rots worktop)
  • Overtightening tap connectors (cracks fittings)
  • Wrong waste size (32mm vs 40mm)
  • Forgetting to support undermount sinks while adhesive sets

💡 Pro trick: When cutting a worktop for a sink, drill a 10mm hole just inside the cutting line in each corner. This lets you turn the jigsaw blade around corners without over-cutting. Also, stick masking tape on top of the worktop along the cutting line - stops the jigsaw chipping the laminate surface.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🏠 Old house with lead pipes? Some Exeter properties still have old lead supply pipes. If you're having a new sink fitted, worth considering upgrading those pipes at the same time - I can advise when I see the setup.

Worktop cutout size: Most sinks come with a template. If you've already cut the hole, measure it carefully before buying a sink - they need to be sized to fit.

Garbage disposal units: If you want a waste disposal unit fitted under a sink, let me know when booking - they need specific plumbing and electrical connections. Takes a bit longer but I can sort it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you cut the worktop hole for the sink or do I need to do that first?

I can cut the worktop hole if it's a standard laminate or wooden worktop. Granite, quartz, or solid surface worktops need a specialist with the right tools - I'll advise you who to use. Most sinks these days come with a template to cut around.

Do undermount sinks cost more to fit than drop-in sinks?

Yes, bit more - they take longer because they have to be supported from underneath while the adhesive sets, and the edge sealing is more critical. Undermount looks cleaner though - no lip catching crumbs. I fit both types regularly.

Can you fit a new sink if the plumbing is in a different position?

Usually yes - within reason. If the new sink is a few inches different from the old one, I can extend or reroute the pipes. If it's a completely different location you might need new pipework running, which takes longer but is doable.

Do I need to provide the sink and taps?

Yes, you'll need to buy those yourself - sinks and taps vary hugely in price and style, so it's better you choose exactly what you want. I'll advise on sizes and compatibility if you're not sure what to get.

How long before I can use the sink?

You can use it straight away - the plumbing is ready to go as soon as I'm done. The only exception is undermount sinks where the adhesive needs 24 hours to cure fully before heavy use. I'll let you know either way.
