Installing bathroom vanity units - assemble if needed, fit basin, plumb in taps and waste, secure to wall, seal edges. Complete bathroom storage solution.

Storage and Style Combined

Vanity units are brilliant - they hide all the plumbing, give you storage for bathroom stuff, and look way smarter than a pedestal basin.

But fitting them properly takes a bit more than just plonking them in place. Basin needs plumbing in, unit needs securing (especially wall-hung ones), everything needs to be level even when your walls and floor aren't. I fit vanity units regularly - I know what works.

💡 Pro tip: If you're buying a vanity unit, measure your existing basin waste pipe position. Units with the waste cut-out in the right place make plumbing much easier. Wrong position and I'm routing pipes all over the place.

What to Expect

Step 1: Assemble (If Needed)

If it's flat-pack, I assemble the unit following manufacturer instructions. Check all parts are there and nothing's damaged.

Step 2: Position & Secure

Work out exact position, get it level (even if walls/floor aren't), mark wall fixings. Drill, plug, and secure unit firmly.

Step 3: Plumb Everything In

Fit basin into/onto unit, fit taps, connect hot and cold supply, fit waste and trap. Seal around basin edge and where unit meets wall.

🔧 DIY Tips

Vanity unit installation is a bigger job but achievable if you're practical:

🔧 Tools you'll need

  • Drill and appropriate drill bits
  • Spirit level (long one)
  • Screwdriver or drill driver
  • Adjustable spanners
  • Silicone sealant and gun
  • Pencil, measuring tape
  • Helper (units are awkward alone)

🚿 Installing a vanity unit

  1. Assemble unit if flat-pack
  2. Position roughly where it'll go
  3. Use spirit level to check floor is level
  4. Adjust feet or use shims if floor slopes
  5. Mark wall through back panel
  6. Move unit, drill and plug wall
  7. Position unit, screw to wall
  8. Fit basin to unit
  9. Connect taps and waste
  10. Connect hot and cold supply
  11. Seal around basin and back edge
  12. Test thoroughly

⚠️ Common DIY mistakes

  • Not checking level before fixing to wall (wonky unit)
  • Wrong wall fixings (pulls out, especially wall-hung units)
  • Forgetting to leave access to plumbing (for future repairs)
  • Not assembling flat-pack properly (drawers don't align)
  • Overtightening basin connections (cracks porcelain)

💡 Pro trick: Before you fix the unit to the wall permanently, do a dry fit with the basin and check where the waste pipe will come out. Make sure it'll actually reach your waste connection without ridiculous gymnastics with the pipework. Easier to adjust the unit position now than after it's screwed to the wall.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🏠 Older houses with uneven floors: Common in Exeter. I adjust the feet on the unit to compensate for sloping floors, getting the unit itself level and plumb. The back may need scribing to fit tight to wonky walls, or we fill the gap with sealant.

Wall-hung units need solid walls: Plasterboard alone won't support a wall-hung vanity unit - too much weight. Need to fix into studs or fit a support frame behind the plasterboard first. I'll check your wall type when I visit.

Integrated vs countertop basins: Integrated basins are sealed into the worktop - neater but harder to replace if damaged. Countertop basins sit on top - easier to swap out but take up more vertical space. Both work fine, just different looks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you assemble the vanity unit or does it need to come pre-assembled?

I can assemble it - most vanity units are flat-pack. Factor in extra time for assembly (usually 30-60 mins depending on complexity). If you want to assemble it yourself before I come, that's fine too - just make sure all the parts are there and nothing's damaged.

Do vanity units need to be fixed to the wall or do they just stand?

Floor-standing units should still be fixed to the wall for stability - stops them toppling if someone leans on them. Wall-hung units MUST be fixed to the wall properly with the right fixings for your wall type - they're taking all the weight.

Can you fit a vanity unit if my walls aren't straight?

Yes - Exeter's full of wonky walls. I use a spirit level to get the unit sitting level and plumb even when the walls aren't. Small gaps at the back can be filled with silicone sealant. If the gap's really bad, sometimes we need to scribe the unit or use a filler panel.

Do I need to provide the basin and taps separately?

Depends on the unit. Some vanity units come with a basin integrated, others have a separate basin that sits on top or drops in. Taps are usually separate. Check what's included when you buy - I'll fit whatever you've got.

How long before I can use the basin?

You can use it straight away once the plumbing's connected and tested. If I've used silicone sealant around the edges or to seal to the wall, that's best left for 24 hours before getting properly wet, but the sink itself works immediately.
