Canvases: Bigger And More Awkward Than You'd Think

You bought a canvas. Looks great. Been leaning against the wall for three months because hanging it yourself is surprisingly annoying.

The problems:

  • Too wide to hold level with one hand while drilling with the other
  • Can't see both ends at once to check it's straight
  • Not sure what fixing to use for the weight
  • Wire or D-rings on back are fiddly to position right

Fair enough. Let me sort it.

💡 Pro tip: For grouped canvases (triptych, multi-panel sets), hang the centre one first, then the outer ones measured from that. Easier than trying to get all three up at once.

What to Expect

Step 1: Position Check

We figure out where it's going - you might already know, or I can advise on height. Canvases usually look best with centre at eye level (about 145-150cm from floor).

Step 2: Mark & Fix

Mark hook positions level with each other, drill and plug, hooks in. Two hooks for wide canvases, one for narrow.

Step 3: Hang & Check

Canvas goes up, I check it's level and sitting flat against the wall. Done.

🔧 DIY Tips

Single canvases are definitely doable yourself:

🔧 Tools you'll need

  • Drill and appropriate bit
  • Wall plugs and hooks (match to wall type)
  • Spirit level
  • Tape measure and pencil
  • Second person helps for large canvases

📐 Hanging a canvas

  1. Decide height - eye level (145cm to centre) usually works
  2. Measure the canvas - width, and distance from top to where wire/D-ring sits
  3. Mark on wall where top of canvas should be
  4. Measure down to where hook goes (wire or D-ring position)
  5. For wide canvas (over 80cm): mark TWO hooks, one each side, using spirit level
  6. For narrow canvas: one central hook is fine
  7. Drill, plug, hook
  8. Hang canvas, check level, adjust if needed

⚠️ Common DIY mistakes

  • Hanging from one hook when it needs two (canvas bows)
  • Not accounting for wire drop (canvas ends up too low)
  • Eyeballing level instead of measuring (wonky)
  • Wrong fixings for wall type (canvas falls)
  • Too high (everyone gets this wrong - lower than you think!)

💡 Pro trick: To find where hook goes: lift canvas by the wire/D-rings to see where they sit when pulled tight. Measure from top of canvas to that point. That's how far below your "top of canvas" mark the hook goes.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🎨 Got other pictures waiting? If you're having me out for one canvas, might as well get everything up. Makes sense cost-wise and your walls finally look finished.

Really large canvases (over 1.2m wide) definitely benefit from two hooks. Spreads the weight and stops the canvas bowing inward at the sides.

Stretched canvas vs prints? Makes no difference to hanging - both get the same treatment. Just check what's on the back (wire, D-rings, or hanging bracket) before I arrive.

Gallery walls with canvas? Works great mixing canvas and framed pictures. Treat it as one picture in the layout. I can help with the arrangement if you want.

Exeter's older walls? Victorian lath-and-plaster, brick, stone - I've hung canvases on all of them. Just need the right fixing for the wall type.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's different about hanging a canvas versus a framed picture?

Canvases are often lighter than framed pictures but bigger and more awkward to handle solo. Most use D-rings or wire on the back rather than a frame hook. Otherwise, same principle - needs to be level and secure. The big ones are a right pain to hang alone because you can't see both ends at once.

My canvas has wire on the back - where do I hang it from?

Ideally from two hooks, one at each side, so the weight's spread and the canvas hangs flat. If you use one central hook, large canvases can bow inward at the sides. I'll advise based on your canvas size.

Can I hang canvas on plasterboard walls?

Yeah, using plasterboard fixings. Most canvases aren't that heavy - a big one might be 3-4kg. Proper plasterboard fixings handle that fine. Really huge canvases I might find a stud to fix into for peace of mind.

How do you get large canvases perfectly level when they're so wide?

Mark both hook positions from measurements, not by eyeballing it. Use a spirit level to make sure the marks are on the same horizontal line. When the canvas goes up, the wire or D-rings pull level because the hooks are level. Works every time.

I've got three canvases that should hang together - can you do that?

Yeah, that's the multiple picture hanging service. I'll make sure they're spaced evenly and all at the right height relative to each other. Looks much better than guessing.
