When Your Kitchen's Got That Patchy Look
Half your kitchen spotlights are dead and you're cooking in weird shadows? Or that hallway that's supposed to have 12 lights but only 3 are working?
Changing spotlights seems simple until you're up a ladder trying to work out if they twist, pull, or clip, and whether you need GU10 or MR16 or some other random code.
💡 Pro tip: If your spotlights are the old halogen type, they'll keep blowing regularly. Switch to LED equivalents and you'll literally never change them again in your lifetime. They last 20+ years.

Advice on LED upgrades
What to Expect
Step 1: Identify & Plan
Turn off the circuit, check what bulb types you've got, work out how they come out (they all fit differently).
Step 2: Replace Bulbs
Remove dead ones, fit new ones, check they're seated properly. If I'm doing LEDs, I'll match the colour temperature to what you had.
Step 3: Test Everything
Power back on, check every single light works. Make sure the brightness and colour looks right across all of them.
🔧 DIY Tips
If you want to have a go yourself:
🔧 Tools you'll need
- Stable ladder or steps
- New bulbs (get the type right!)
- Gloves (bulbs get hot if they've been on)
💡 Working out bulb types
- GU10 - twist and pull, mains voltage (240V)
- MR16 - push and pull clips, low voltage (12V)
- GU5.3 - push pins, low voltage (12V)
- Look at the base of a working bulb to check
🔄 Removing different types
- GU10: Gentle push in, quarter turn anticlockwise, pull out
- MR16: Squeeze the spring clips either side, pull straight out
- Some have trim rings that unscrew first
⚠️ Common mistakes
- Not turning power off (please turn it off)
- Forcing bulbs the wrong way
- Mixing warm and cool white (looks weird)
- Not checking if they're low voltage before buying mains bulbs
- Using halogen when LED is available
💡 Pro trick: Take a dead bulb to the shop with you. Much easier than trying to remember codes. And if you're replacing some, replace them all - mixed ages look patchy as some get dimmer over time.
Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.
Good to Know
🎯 LED upgrade: If you're still on halogen, switching to LED costs about the same as buying halogen bulbs, but LEDs last 20+ years and use 90% less electricity. It's a no-brainer.
Warm white vs daylight? Most kitchens and living rooms look better with warm white (2700-3000K). Bathrooms and offices can take daylight (4000-5000K). I can advise when I'm there.
Older Exeter properties? Period houses often have been retrofitted with spotlights in ceilings that weren't designed for them. Sometimes the fittings are awkward or non-standard - I've seen it all and can usually work out what's going on.
Transformers failing? If you've got low-voltage MR16 lights and they keep dying, it might be the transformer rather than the bulbs. I can check and advise if you need them replaced.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can't I just change the bulbs myself?
You can if you can reach them safely and know what bulbs you need. But high ceilings, not knowing if it's GU10 or MR16, or having 12 dead spotlights means it's often easier to get someone who's got the right steps and knows what they're doing.
How do I know what bulbs I need?
That's actually the main reason people call me. GU10, MR16, GU5.3, different wattages, warm white vs daylight - it's confusing. I'll check what you've got and fit the right ones. If they're the old halogen type, I'll usually suggest LED equivalents - they're better.
Can you do all my spotlights while you're here?
Absolutely - that's the most efficient way. If you've got dead ones scattered round the house, I'll do them all in one visit. Much cheaper than multiple callouts.
My spotlights keep blowing - is that normal?
If you're still using halogen bulbs, yeah they blow all the time. Switching to LED means they last 20+ years instead of 6 months. I can swap the lot over and you'll never be changing bulbs again.
Do I need to turn the electricity off?
Yes, for safety. I'll turn off the circuit at the consumer unit before changing any bulbs. Some spotlights are mains voltage, some are low voltage - either way, safer to isolate them first.
