Transform a Room in Two Hours

Wall murals are brilliant. One wall, one afternoon, completely different room. But here's the problem: they're deceptively tricky to hang yourself.

Unlike normal wallpaper where a slight overlap doesn't matter, murals have to line up perfectly. Half a centimetre out and that forest scene has a weird line through it, or your kid's space mural has two separate moons.

Why DIY Murals Often Go Wrong

I've seen a lot of "I tried myself first" mural jobs. Here's what usually happens:

✅ Done Right❌ Done Wrong
Panels perfectly aligned edge-to-edgeVisible gaps or overlaps in the image
Smooth, bubble-free finishBubbles everywhere, especially in corners
Pattern matches across joinsImage doesn't line up properly
Straight and levelWonky, following the skirting (which isn't level)

The difference? Experience with large-format wallcoverings. I've hung hundreds of murals - I know the tricks.

What to Expect

Step 1: Wall Check & Prep

I check your wall condition, fill any holes, and make sure the surface is smooth enough. Can't hang a mural on rubbish - it'll show every lump.

Step 2: First Panel Goes Up

This one's critical - has to be perfectly level. I mark a plumb line and use that, not your skirting board (which is never level in older Exeter houses).

Step 3: Build The Image

Each panel goes up carefully, butted edge-to-edge with the last one. The pattern has to flow across seamlessly. Take my time here - rushing creates problems.

Step 4: Smooth & Trim

Work out all the bubbles, trim top and bottom, check the whole thing. You won't see where the panels join.

🔧 DIY Tips

Feeling brave? Here's how to avoid the common disasters:

🔧 Tools you'll need

  • Pasting table (or wallpaper pasting board)
  • Wallpaper paste (check what your mural needs)
  • Smoothing brush or plastic smoother
  • Sharp knife and straight edge
  • Plumb line or long spirit level
  • Clean sponge and bucket

📐 The hanging process

  1. Find true vertical - use a plumb line, NOT your door frame or skirting
  2. Number your panels - seriously, mark them. Easy to get them mixed up
  3. Start in the right place - usually centre of the wall and work outward
  4. Paste properly - too much = slides around, too little = won't stick
  5. Take your time aligning - you've got about 10 minutes to adjust before it starts setting
  6. Smooth from centre outward - this pushes air bubbles out

⚠️ Common DIY mistakes

  • Starting from one edge (often means pattern doesn't centre)
  • Not checking the first panel is truly vertical
  • Rushing the alignment
  • Pasting the wall instead of the paper (check instructions!)
  • Using the wrong paste for the mural type

💡 Pro trick: If you get a bubble you can't smooth out, use a pin to make a tiny hole in the centre, then smooth the air out through it. The hole disappears when dry.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🎨 Redecorating the whole room? Get the mural up first, then paint the other walls. Much easier than trying to paste around freshly painted walls.

Multiple jobs? While I'm set up with pasting table and tools, makes sense to do any other wallpapering you need. More cost-effective than two separate visits.

Older Exeter walls? Victorian and Edwardian walls can be a bit... lumpy. I deal with that all the time. Might need a bit more prep, but the mural will still go up perfectly.

Removing old mural later? Most modern murals are "strippable" - they peel off in sheets when you're done with them. Check yours says that on the packaging. Makes future redecorating much easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between hanging a mural and normal wallpaper?

Murals are much less forgiving - the pattern has to line up perfectly across multiple panels or the image looks wrong. One panel slightly off and the whole thing's ruined. Plus they're often bigger and heavier than standard wallpaper, so harder to handle solo.

Do I need to prep the wall first?

I'll do basic prep as part of the job - fill obvious holes, wipe down, make sure it's smooth. If your wall's in really rough shape (flaking paint, major holes), I'll let you know and we can sort that first. Most walls in Exeter homes are fine with just a quick prep.

Can you hang murals on textured walls?

Depends on the texture. Lightly textured - usually fine, the mural paste fills small bumps. Heavily textured (like artex or woodchip) - not recommended, you'll see every lump through the mural. I can advise when I see it.

I bought a cheap mural off Amazon - will you still fit it?

Yeah, no problem. Quality varies massively with budget murals - some are great, some are nightmare thin paper that tears if you look at it wrong. I'll work with whatever you've got, but I'll be honest about whether it's going to go up nicely.

How long before I can paint the surrounding walls?

Give it 24 hours for the paste to fully dry. Then you can paint around it, fit coving, whatever you need. The mural won't shift once it's set.
