Make Your House the Talk of the Street

There's something brilliant about Christmas lights done properly - it makes your house stand out, looks welcoming, and adds to the festive atmosphere for everyone. But let's be honest: getting up on a ladder in December, fighting with gutter clips, and trying not to fall off is nobody's idea of fun.

Especially in Devon weather. In the dark. On a cold roof.

💡 Pro tip: Professional installation means lights go up safely, look even and intentional, and come down in January without you risking your neck twice.

What to Expect

Step 1: Assessment & Planning

I'll check your roofline, features, and what you want lit. Work out the best approach and how much you'll need (if you haven't bought lights yet).

Step 2: Safe Installation

Lights clipped along gutters/rooflines, wrapped around trees, attached to features. Everything secured against wind and weather. Proper ladder work, not cowboy stuff.

Step 3: Power & Testing

Safe outdoor power connection, timer set up if wanted. Everything tested, adjusted for even appearance, and switched on to check the effect.

🔧 DIY Tips

If you're determined to do it yourself (brave), here's how to stay safe and get good results:

🔧 Tools you'll need

  • Proper ladder (footed by someone else)
  • Gutter clips (all-in-one type or separate hooks)
  • Outdoor-rated extension cable
  • Timer plug (optional but useful)
  • Someone to help (seriously, don't do this alone)
  • Weatherproof cable connections

🏠 Roof edge installation safely

  1. Use proper ladder, have someone foot it
  2. Attach clips to gutter edge first
  3. Then clip lights into clips (easier than doing both at once)
  4. Work in sections - don't overreach
  5. Check from ground regularly for even spacing

🌲 Tree wrapping method

  • Start at bottom of trunk
  • Wrap lights around as you work up
  • Keep spacing even (roughly one hand width between wraps)
  • Secure at top and bottom
  • Step back to check coverage

⚠️ Common DIY mistakes

  • Overreaching from ladder (dangerous)
  • Using indoor extension cable outdoors (fire risk)
  • Not securing cables against wind (pulls sockets out)
  • Uneven spacing (looks amateur)
  • Doing it alone (how will you hold the ladder AND the lights?)

💡 Pro trick: Do it during daylight but test at dusk before calling it done. What looks even in daylight might have dark spots you only notice when it's lit. Easier to adjust while you're already set up.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

❄️ December weather? I work around the weather - no working on wet roofs or in high winds. Safety first. If we need to reschedule for a dry day, we will.

Need lights supplied? I can advise on what you'll need and where to get them, but you'll need to buy them. I'm the installer, not the shop!

Takedown service? I can come back in January and take everything down, test each string, and pack it all properly for next year. Much easier than doing it yourself in the cold and wet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What outdoor lights can you install?

Everything - roof edge lights, gutter lights, tree lights (wrapped or hanging), window lights, door frame lights, garden features, the lot. If it needs plugging in and putting up outdoors, I can do it. Just bring your own lights or let me know what you're planning.

Will you damage my gutters or roof?

Nope - I use proper light clips designed for gutters and rooflines. They grip without drilling or damaging. Everything removes cleanly in January without marks. I've done enough of these in Exeter to know what works on older houses.

How do you power outdoor lights safely?

Outdoor socket if you've got one is best. If not, I can run extension through a window with a proper weatherproof connection point. Everything rated for outdoor use, and I can set up a timer so lights switch on/off automatically.

Can you do trees as well as the house?

Yes - trees wrapped with lights look brilliant. I'll wrap from bottom up, spacing evenly for good coverage. Takes longer than roof lights but the effect is worth it.

How long does a typical house take?

Average semi with roof edge and a couple of features - usually 2-3 hours. Big houses with multiple rooflines, trees, and complex displays can take 4-5 hours. I'll give you a better estimate once I see your place and what you're planning.
