The Inevitable Post-Christmas Job
Christmas tree looked gorgeous in December. Mid-January? It's a brown, needle-dropping fire hazard taking up half your living room. Time for it to go.
But getting a dead tree out is messier than getting it in. Needles everywhere. Trail through the house. Can't fit it in the wheelie bin. Car still full of presents to return.
💡 Pro tip: Dead trees shed needles at an alarming rate. The longer you leave it, the worse the mess when you eventually move it.
Just Get Rid of It
Sixty quid and half an hour and it's gone. I carry it out, clean up the worst mess, dispose of it properly at the recycling centre. Your problem becomes my problem.

Why Choose Us for Christmas tree disposal in Exeter?

Worst of the needles vacuumed up
Disposed of properly at recycling centre
Your house back to normal in 30 minutes
What to Expect
Step 1: Quick Assessment
I look at the tree and access route. Work out the best way to get it out with minimum mess. Put down dust sheets if needed.
Step 2: Remove & Carry Out
Take tree out of stand (carefully - stands tip over easily when you lift the tree). Carry it straight outside to the van. Some needle trail is inevitable but I minimise it.
Step 3: Clean & Dispose
Quick vacuum of the obvious needles around where the tree stood. Load tree in van, take it to recycling centre where it gets chipped into mulch.
🔧 DIY Tips
Want to do it yourself? Fair enough - here's how to minimise the mess:
🔧 What you'll need
- Large tarp or old sheet
- Bin bags (multiple)
- Vacuum cleaner
- Someone to help carry
- Car big enough (or roof rack)
- Gloves (sap is sticky)
🎄 Getting it out cleanly
- Water the tree the day before (sounds weird but helps needles stick)
- Remove all decorations first (check every branch)
- Lay a tarp next to the tree
- Tip the tree onto the tarp
- Wrap tarp around it (contains most needles)
- Carry it straight outside - don't stop halfway
🚗 Disposal options
- Council recycling centres (free, tree-chipping available)
- Kerbside collection (check council dates - usually mid-Jan)
- Garden waste bin (if tree is small enough)
- Commercial recycling (some garden centres collect for charity)
- Leave it too long in the garden and neighbours complain
⚠️ Common mistakes
- Trying to drag it through the house (needle motorway)
- Not checking for missed decorations (bye bye favourite bauble)
- Attempting to stuff it in wheelie bin (won't fit, won't get collected)
- Leaving it in the garden "temporarily" (still there in March)
- Not vacuuming afterwards (finding needles until next Christmas)
💡 Pro trick: Before moving the tree, give it a really good shake outside your front door. Gets the loosest needles off before you carry it through. Makes a surprising difference to the mess trail.
Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.
Good to Know
🎨 Big January clear-up? I can help pack away decorations, take down outside lights, tidy the garage where the tree stand lives - whatever needs doing to get back to normal.
Pot-grown trees: If yours was a living tree in a pot and you want to plant it in the garden, I can help with that instead of disposal. Different job but I can do it.
Old Exeter houses with narrow halls: Yeah, I know. Getting trees through Victorian hallways is always interesting. I've done hundreds - we'll get it out without destroying your walls.
Recycling centres get busy in January: Everyone has the same idea the first weekend after New Year. I know the quiet times and which centres process trees fastest.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I get rid of the tree?
Traditionally 12th night (5th or 6th January), but really whenever it's looking sad. If it's dropping loads of needles or the branches are drooping, it's done its job. Fresh trees last 3-4 weeks max.
Will you clean up all the needles?
I'll vacuum up the worst of them and the obvious mess, but you'll still need to hoover properly once I've gone. Pine needles have a way of hiding everywhere - under sofas, in carpets, down radiator gaps.
What happens to the tree?
Goes to the recycling centre where it gets chipped into mulch for gardens and parks. Much better than landfill. Some councils do kerbside collection but that's usually specific dates in January.
Can you take down decorations as well?
Tree removal is just the tree - you keep your baubles and lights. If you want help de-decorating or packing away Christmas stuff, that's a separate job and we can chat about it.
What about artificial trees?
If you need help disassembling a big fake tree and packing it away, I can do that too. Usually quicker than real tree disposal (no needles) but takes a bit longer to take apart properly.
