Broken Christmas tree lights carefully removed and replaced with a new working set. Tree re-lit properly without having to strip all your decorations and start again.
When Half Your Tree Goes Dark
You're all decorated, looking gorgeous, then half the tree goes dark. Or worse - they're flashing randomly when they shouldn't be. Or making a weird buzzing noise.
Classic Christmas tree lights failure. Always happens after you've put all the decorations on, obviously.
💡 Pro tip: Those cheap light sets are brilliant until they're not. When they fail, replacing them is usually faster and cheaper than trying to fix them.
Rescue Your Tree Without Starting Over
The thought of stripping all the decorations, removing all the lights, starting again... just no. Too much time, too much effort, too much "remember where that special bauble was?"
I can remove just the lights, keep most decorations in place, fit new lights properly, and your tree is rescued in an hour.

🔧 DIY Tips
Still want to tackle it yourself? Here's the best approach:
🔧 What you'll need
- New Christmas tree lights (see quantity guide below)
- Patience (lots of it)
- Second person to help (really helps)
- Somewhere to safely place removed decorations
- Step ladder (for tall trees)
💡 How many lights?
- 4-5ft tree: 300-500 lights
- 6-7ft tree: 600-700 lights
- 8ft+ tree: 800-1000 lights
- More lights = fuller look
- LED lights are brighter than old incandescent
🎄 Replacing lights carefully
- Take photos of decorated tree first (helps remember placement)
- Remove decorations from bottom third of tree only (if possible)
- Carefully unwind faulty lights, working top to bottom
- Start new lights at the back of the tree, work forward
- Weave in and out of branches (not just wrapped around outside)
- Test each section as you go
- Replace decorations once lights are done
⚠️ Common mistakes
- Wrapping lights around outside only (looks amateur)
- Uneven distribution (loads on front, none on back)
- Not testing until you're completely finished (find dead section)
- Buying wrong quantity (too few looks sparse, too many is tangled hell)
- Removing ALL decorations when you only needed to move some
💡 Pro trick: Start lights at the back of tree near the trunk and work outwards to the tips of branches. Creates depth and makes the tree glow from within. Looks way better than just spiralling around the outside.
Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.
Good to Know
🎨 Tree looking tired generally? While I'm there I can straighten it up, top up the water, adjust wonky decorations. Get the whole tree looking fresh again.
Types of lights: LED vs incandescent, warm white vs cool white vs multi-colour. LED lasts longer and uses less power but some people prefer the warmer glow of old bulbs. Your choice - I can work with whatever you want.
Old vs new light styles: Modern light sets are easier to work with (lighter, more flexible wires) but if you want that vintage big-bulb look, I can fit those too. Just takes a bit longer.
Storage tip for next year: Wind lights loosely around cardboard or a dedicated light storage reel. Store somewhere dry. Makes next Christmas way easier and lights last longer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can't I just fix the broken bulb?
In theory yes, in practice it's a nightmare. Modern LED strings are wired in series so one dead bulb can kill a whole section. Finding which bulb is the problem takes forever, and replacement bulbs are often harder to find than just buying new lights.
Do I need to buy new lights first?
Either way works. If you've already got them, great. If not, tell me what you want (warm white, multi-colour, quantity) and I can grab them on the way. Easier than you making a separate trip.
Will you have to take all my decorations off?
Not all of them - just enough to get the lights out. Baubles and tinsel can stay mostly. It's fiddly but nowhere near as bad as starting the whole tree from scratch.
How many lights do I need for my tree?
Rough guide: 100 lights per foot of tree height. So a 6ft tree wants about 600 lights for decent coverage. You can go more for a really lit-up look, or less for subtle. I'll advise when I see your tree.
Why don't the lights work anyway?
Usually a dead bulb in a cheap set, dodgy connection, or the fuse in the plug. Sometimes water got in last year when you stored them in the damp garage. Honestly, for the price of lights these days it's often not worth diagnosing.
