LED Bulbs Are Great But Also Confusing

You know LEDs save money and last forever. But standing in the shop looking at hundreds of options and trying to work out lumens and colour temperatures and what actually fits your lights?

💡 Pro tip: Don't just grab "any LED bulb" - cheap ones flicker, some don't dim properly, wrong colour makes your room feel cold. Get the right ones first time.

🔧 DIY Tips

Want to convert to LED yourself? Here's what to know:

🔧 Understanding the numbers

  • Lumens: actual brightness (replace 60W old bulb with 800 lumen LED)
  • Watts: power used (LED equivalent is 8-10W)
  • Colour temp: 2700K = warm (cosy), 4000K = cool (bright), 5500K = daylight (very white)
  • CRI: colour rendering 80+ looks natural, avoid cheap 60-70 CRI bulbs

📐 Fitting types

  • B22: bayonet cap (push and twist) - most common in UK
  • E27: screw cap (large thread)
  • E14: small screw cap (candle bulbs)
  • GU10: spotlight twist-lock
  • MR16: 12V spotlight (needs transformer check)

⚠️ Common LED mistakes

  • Buying wrong colour temperature (room feels cold/sterile)
  • Non-dimmable bulbs on dimmer switches (buzzing)
  • Cheap bulbs that flicker or have poor colour
  • Wrong wattage equivalent (too dim or too bright)
  • Not checking if enclosed fitting compatible

💡 Pro trick: Buy ONE bulb of your chosen type first. Test it in the actual room for a few days. If you like it, buy the rest. Much cheaper than discovering you hate the colour after buying 20 bulbs.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🎨 Dimmers need replacing? Most old dimmer switches won't work properly with LEDs. I can swap them for LED-compatible dimmers while I'm there - makes a big difference.

Whole house conversion? I'll work out exactly what you need for every fitting, then you can buy them all in one order. Often cheaper to buy in bulk online than individually from shops.

Enclosed fittings? Bathroom ceiling lights, fully enclosed lanterns, some downlights - not all LEDs work in these because they can't cool down. I'll specify which ones need special "enclosed fitting compatible" bulbs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I need advice on LED bulbs?

Because it's confusing! There's warm white, cool white, daylight, lumens vs watts, dimmable vs non-dimmable, fitting types, compatibility with older fittings. I'll work out exactly what you need and make sure it all works together.

Will LED bulbs work in my older light fittings?

Usually yes, but not always. Some older dimmer switches need replacing to work with LEDs. Enclosed fittings can overheat some LED bulbs. I'll check your actual fittings and recommend bulbs that'll work properly, not just say 'any LED will do'.

How much money will I actually save switching to LED?

Depends how much you're lighting is on, but rough rule: a 60W old bulb costs about £20/year to run, an equivalent 8W LED costs about £3/year. Times that by how many bulbs you've got. Payback is usually under a year, then it's pure saving.

Can you fit the LED bulbs for me?

Yes - especially helpful for high ceiling lights or if you've got loads to change. I'll bring the right bulbs (or advise what to buy), fit them all, check they work with your switches and dimmers, job done.

What's the difference between warm white and cool white?

Warm white (2700-3000K) is yellowish like old bulbs - cosy for living rooms. Cool white (4000-5000K) is whiter - good for kitchens and bathrooms. Daylight (5500K+) is very white - more like actual daylight. I'll recommend what suits each room.
