Remote stopped working? I'll change the batteries, test it works, and show you how to do it yourself next time. Simple help for when small jobs feel like big ones.

When Small Jobs Aren't Small

For most people, changing remote batteries is nothing. For others - it's impossible.

Arthritis makes those battery covers impossible to slide off. Poor eyesight means you can't see which way round the batteries go. Shaky hands mean batteries keep dropping on the floor.

If that sounds familiar, this service is for you.

💡 Pro tip: There's no shame in needing help with tasks that used to be easy. That's exactly what I'm here for.

Why People Call Me For This

Hands don't work like they used to - arthritis, tremors, reduced grip

Can't see clearly - tiny + and - markings are impossible

Just need someone reliable - family's too busy or too far away

It's one of several small jobs - change batteries, fix the door handle, sort the dripping tap

Pricing

£60 minimum - that's my callout price for anything under an hour.

If you've got other little jobs that need doing while I'm there (stick down loose carpet, tighten door handles, replace lightbulbs), tell me when you book. Makes better use of the hour you're paying for anyway.

Batteries included. No hidden costs.

What to Expect

Step 1: I Arrive With Batteries

I bring a selection of common sizes. Check which type your remote needs and fit them.

Step 2: Test & Pair

Make sure the remote actually works with new batteries. If it needs pairing to your TV or set-top box, I'll do that too.

Step 3: Show You

I'll demonstrate how the battery cover works and which way round batteries go. If you want to try it yourself with my help, we can do that. If not, that's fine too.

🔧 DIY Tips

If you want to try yourself (or help someone else), here's how:

🔧 Opening battery covers

  • Slide covers: Push in direction of arrow and slide
  • Clip covers: Press the tab and lift
  • Screw covers: Tiny screwdriver, don't lose the screw
  • If stuck: Don't force it - you'll break the clips

📐 Which way round?

  • Look for + and - markings inside the compartment
  • Spring end is always - (negative)
  • Flat end is always + (positive)
  • Match the markings on the batteries to the compartment

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Forcing stuck covers (they break easily)
  • Mixing old and new batteries (use all new ones)
  • Wrong type of battery (AA vs AAA look similar but aren't)
  • Putting them in backwards (won't work, won't damage anything)

💡 Pro trick: Take a photo of the battery compartment before you remove old batteries. Then you can see exactly which way round they were.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🎨 Got a few remotes that don't work? Bring them all out when I visit. I'll test which are dead batteries and which are broken remotes. Can save you buying new ones unnecessarily.

Regular help needed? Some customers call me every few months for a batch of small jobs - change batteries, replace lightbulbs, tighten handles. Whatever's built up. We can set up regular visits if that's easier for you.

Family arranging this? I work with lots of families who book these services for elderly relatives. You can arrange and pay over the phone, I visit your mum/dad/grandparent, and send you a quick message when it's done. Simple.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this service mainly for elderly people?

Mostly, yes. If you're finding fiddly tasks difficult - arthritis, poor eyesight, shaky hands - I'm happy to help with these little jobs that others might think are too small. No judgment, just helpful.

Do you supply the batteries?

Yes - I bring a range of common batteries (AAA, AA, button cells). If it's something unusual I don't have, I'll grab them from the shop and come back. All included in the price.

Will you show me how to do it next time?

Absolutely. I'll show you exactly how the battery compartment opens, which way round the batteries go (+ and - markings), and any tricks to make it easier. If you still find it tricky, just call me next time.

What if the remote still doesn't work after new batteries?

Then it's not a battery problem. Might need re-pairing to the TV, or the remote itself could be faulty. I'll test that while I'm there and explain what's actually wrong.

Can you check other remotes while you're there?

Sure - if you've got a drawer full of remotes and aren't sure which work, I can test them all, change batteries where needed, and label which remote is for what. Makes life easier.
