Wide angle spy hole fitted to your front door. See who's there before opening - much better than the narrow old-style viewers. Properly drilled, cleanly fitted, works perfectly.
Know Who's Knocking
Someone's at your door. Could be the postman. Could be someone selling something. Could be someone you don't want to let in.
With no spy hole, you're either opening the door to find out (not ideal) or shouting "who is it?" through the door (also not ideal).
A wide angle spy hole means you see the whole doorstep. See who's there, see if they've got parcels, see if there's more than one person. Then decide whether to open the door.
Simple security upgrade that costs about £60 total.
💡 Pro tip: Get a wide angle one (180° or 200°). The old narrow ones only show what's directly in front - people can stand to the side and you won't see them.
Wide Angle vs Standard Viewer
| ✅ Wide Angle Spy Hole | ❌ No Viewer/Old Style |

| See whole doorstep area | Open door blind or narrow view |
| Know who's there before opening | Have to ask through door |
| See people standing to the side | Standard viewers miss this |
| Feel safer, especially elderly | Worry about who's knocking |

Wide angle view of whole doorstep
Fitted at right height for you
No damage to door, clean finish
What to Expect
Step 1: Choose Height
We work out the right height for you to look through comfortably. Usually around 1.5m but depends on your height.
Step 2: Drill The Hole
Mark the center point, drill cleanly through the door. Takes care - needs to be straight or the viewer won't fit properly.
Step 3: Fit The Viewer
Viewer body goes through from outside, eyepiece screws on from inside. Tightened up so it's secure and sealed.
Step 4: Test It
You have a look through to check the view's good and it's at a comfortable height. Adjust if needed.
🔧 DIY Tips
You can fit a spy hole yourself if you're confident drilling:
🔧 What you'll need
- Wide angle door viewer (£10-20)
- Drill with wood/metal bit (size matches viewer - usually 12-14mm)
- Tape measure and pencil
- Spirit level (or just eyeball it)
- Maybe masking tape for the door surface
📐 Positioning
- Decide height (usually 1.4-1.6m from floor)
- Mark center of door at that height
- Mark both sides so it's exactly lined up
- Put masking tape on both sides (stops splintering)
🔧 Drilling process
- Drill pilot hole from outside (3mm bit)
- Check it comes out right place inside
- Drill full size hole from outside (slowly!)
- Stop before you go all the way through
- Finish from inside to prevent splintering
- Remove tape, clean hole
- Insert viewer from outside
- Screw eyepiece on from inside
- Tighten until snug
⚠️ Common DIY mistakes
- Drilling all the way through from one side (splinters the other side)
- Wrong height (too low or too high to use comfortably)
- Not straight through (viewer won't fit or will be wonky)
- Cheap viewer that gives distorted image
💡 Pro trick: Drill from both sides meeting in the middle. Stops any splintering on either face. Takes longer but gives cleaner result, especially on nice front doors.
Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.
Good to Know
🚪 Composite or PVC doors? These can be trickier than wooden doors - there's often metal reinforcement inside. I've got the right bits to handle it without damaging the door.
Multiple doors? Some people want them on front and back, or front and side door. Bundle them together in one visit.
For elderly relatives? Can fit it lower if mobility issues mean they can't reach standard height. Or fit two at different heights if multiple people use the door.
Digital viewers? You can get electronic door viewers with a screen inside (£80-150). Much easier for people who can't bend or see through small holes. I can fit those too if you want to go that route.
Worried about drilling? Understandable if it's a nice door. I do it carefully - pilot hole first, clean cut, no mess. Done hundreds of them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's a wide angle spy hole?
It's a door viewer with a wider lens - lets you see more of the doorstep, including people standing to the side. Standard ones only show what's directly in front, wide angle shows 180° or more.
Can you fit one to any door?
Pretty much - wooden doors, composite doors, PVC doors. As long as it's solid enough and the right thickness (most doors are 40-50mm). Can't fit to glass panels obviously.
What height should it be?
Usually about 1.5m (eye height for average person). I fit it at whatever height suits you - lower if you're shorter or have mobility issues, higher if you're tall. Whatever lets you see through it comfortably.
Will it weaken my door?
No - it's a small diameter hole (usually 12-14mm) drilled cleanly through. Won't affect door strength at all. The viewer screws together from both sides so it's all sealed.
Can you replace an existing spy hole with a better one?
Yes - often the old ones are narrow view or damaged. I can take out the old one and fit a new wide angle viewer. Usually goes in the same hole if it's the right size.
