Thermometer mounted properly where you can actually see it. Right height, right location for accurate readings, securely fixed. Stop squinting at wonky thermometers.
Actually See The Temperature
You've got a nice outdoor thermometer. Or an indoor one for the nursery. Or one for the greenhouse.
It's been leaning against the shed for 3 months because drilling a hole in the wall seems like a faff and you're not sure where it should go anyway.
Meanwhile you're checking the weather on your phone instead of just looking at the actual thermometer right there.
I'll mount it properly in 10 minutes. Right height to read easily, right location for accurate temperature, securely fixed so it's not going anywhere.
💡 Pro tip: Outdoor thermometers need to be in shade - direct sunlight makes them read 5-10°C higher than actual temperature. North-facing wall is usually best.

What to Expect
Step 1: Choose Location
We work out the best spot - for outdoor ones that means shaded, for indoor ones that means visible and accurate.
Step 2: Mark Position
Height that's easy to read (usually around eye level), check it's level if that matters for the thermometer type.
Step 3: Drill & Fix
Pilot holes drilled, appropriate fixings used for your wall type, thermometer mounted securely.
Step 4: Check It Works
Make sure it's readable, level if needed, and (for digital ones) that it's working.
🔧 DIY Tips
Mounting a thermometer yourself is straightforward:
🔧 What you'll need
- Drill with masonry bit (for brick/render)
- Wall plugs and screws (appropriate to wall type)
- Spirit level (if thermometer needs to be level)
- Pencil for marking
- Tape measure
📍 Choosing location (outdoor)
- Shade: North-facing wall ideal
- Height: 1.2-1.5m from ground
- Away from: Windows, doors, vents (false readings)
- Visible: Somewhere you'll actually look at it
📍 Choosing location (indoor)
- Height: Eye level for easy reading
- Away from: Radiators, windows, direct sun
- Good spot: Main living area or nursery
🔧 Mounting process
- Hold thermometer in position, mark fixing holes
- Check it's level (if it needs to be)
- Drill pilot holes
- Insert wall plugs
- Screw thermometer to wall
- Don't over-tighten (can crack face)
⚠️ Common DIY mistakes
- Mounting in direct sun (outdoor ones read too high)
- Too close to radiator (indoor ones read too high)
- Not checking if it's level (looks wonky)
- Wrong fixings for wall type (pulls out)
- Overtightening screws (cracks thermometer)
💡 Pro trick: For really accurate outdoor readings, mount it on a post in the garden away from the house. But that's more faff than most people want - shaded wall works fine for general use.
Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.
Good to Know
🌡️ Digital vs analog? Digital thermometers with wireless sensors give you indoor reading of outdoor temperature. Convenient but need batteries. Old-fashioned analog ones just work forever.
Multiple locations? Greenhouse, shed, pond area, nursery - wherever you want to monitor temperature. Can do them all in one visit.
Weather stations? If you've got a full weather station with wind/rain/pressure sensors, I can mount all the components properly. Just takes a bit longer.
Pool/hot tub thermometers? Different mounting - usually float in the water or on a string. But I can mount the display unit if it's got one.
Maximum/minimum thermometers? Great for greenhouses and nurseries - show highest and lowest temperatures reached. Mount them same way as standard ones, just make sure buttons are accessible for resetting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where should an outdoor thermometer go?
Somewhere shaded - direct sun gives false readings. Usually north-facing wall is best. High enough that ground heat doesn't affect it (about 1.5m up). I'll advise best spot when I see your house.
Can you mount thermometers on brick, render, or wood?
All of them - just need different fixings. Brick gets wall plugs, render needs careful drilling, wood is straightforward screws. Won't damage any surface.
What about wireless thermometers with sensors?
Can mount both parts - sensor outside, display inside. Make sure they're in range of each other and sensor's positioned for accurate readings.
Will drilling damage my wall?
Minimal - thermometers only need small pilot holes. I drill carefully and use appropriate fixings. Holes are tiny if you ever remove it.
Can you mount multiple thermometers?
Yes - some people want one outside, one in greenhouse, one by pond, etc. I can do as many as you want in one visit.
