When Your Channels Go AWOL

You go to watch BBC Two and it's not there. ITV's moved. Half your channels are duplicated with weird numbers. You just want it working like it did before.

TV retuning is simple when you know what you're doing. Infuriating when you don't.

💡 Pro tip: TV retuning is one of those tasks that's dead easy for someone who does it regularly, but utterly baffling first time. Every TV brand has different menus.

Step 3: Tidy Up

Delete duplicate channels, check HD versions are there, test main channels work, check channel numbers are sensible.

🔧 DIY Tips

You can retune your own TV if you're confident with menus:

🔧 What you'll need

  • TV remote control
  • 15 minutes
  • Patience with menus

📺 Basic retune process

  1. Press MENU on your remote
  2. Find "Setup" or "Installation" or "Channels"
  3. Select "Auto-tune" or "Retune"
  4. Choose "Add channels" NOT "Replace channels" (keeps existing)
  5. Wait for scan to complete
  6. Exit menus, test channels

🎯 For specific brands

  • Samsung: Menu > Broadcasting > Auto Tuning
  • LG: Settings > All Settings > Channels > Channel Tuning
  • Sony: Home > Settings > Channels > Digital Setup > Auto Tuning
  • Panasonic: Menu > Setup > DVB Tuning Menu > Auto Update

⚠️ Common DIY mistakes

  • Choosing "Replace channels" (deletes everything, starts fresh - annoying)
  • Canceling partway through scan (channels incomplete)
  • Not waiting for "100% complete" message
  • Forgetting to reset scheduled recordings

💡 Pro trick: Write down the channel numbers for your favorites BEFORE retuning. Then if they change, you'll know which new number BBC One has moved to.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🎨 While I'm there: TV retune doesn't take long. If you've got other TV issues - wonky wall bracket, cables everywhere, want Freeview box set up - we can tackle them too.

Freeview vs Freesat: Freeview comes from a land-based transmitter via your roof aerial. Freesat comes from a satellite dish. They're different systems. This service is for Freeview (normal aerial). Freesat retuning is similar but different menus.

HD channels: If you've got an HD TV and decent signal, your retune should find HD versions of main channels (BBC One HD, ITV HD etc). They often appear at higher channel numbers (101+ instead of 1-5). You can manually move them to your preferred positions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do TVs need retuning?

TV transmitters occasionally change frequencies (happens every few years), and sometimes new channels launch or old ones move position. Your TV still works, but some channels go missing or appear in the wrong order. Retuning searches for all available channels and puts them in the right place.

I've lost some channels - will retuning get them back?

Usually yes, if they're still broadcasting. Common problem is channels moving frequency and your TV not finding them automatically. A manual retune searches all frequencies and should restore missing channels. If they're still missing after retune, might be an aerial issue.

Can't I just press 'auto-tune' on the remote?

You can, but TV menus are confusing and every brand is different. Auto-tune might duplicate channels, leave gaps, or not find HD versions. I'll do a proper retune, delete duplicates, and get everything in the right order. Also good chance to explain it so you can do it yourself next time.

Will I lose my recordings if you retune?

No - recordings you've already made stay safe. However, scheduled recordings might need resetting if the channel number changes. I'll check your planner and advise if anything needs updating.

Is this service mainly for elderly people who struggle with remotes?

It's useful for anyone who finds TV menus baffling (which is most people - they're terribly designed). Particularly helpful for elderly people who just want their TV working without the tech stress.
