Webcam mounted securely at proper eye level with good lighting and background. You'll look professional on video calls instead of like you're filming from inside a cave.

Stop Looking Like An Amateur On Video Calls

If you're working from home and on video calls all day, that laptop camera angle looking straight up your nose isn't doing you any favours. Neither is the webcam balanced wonkily on top of your monitor, or the terrible backlighting making you look like a silhouette.

Proper webcam positioning makes you look competent and professional. Bad webcam positioning makes you look like you don't care.

💡 Pro tip: Camera angle matters more than camera quality. A cheap webcam at eye level looks better than an expensive one looking up from your desk.

🔧 DIY Tips

Want to position your webcam yourself? Here's the basics:

📐 Positioning rules

  • Camera lens at eye level when you're sitting normally
  • About 50cm away from your face (arm's length)
  • Centered on your face, not off to one side
  • Slight downward angle is better than upward

💡 Lighting tips

  • Face a window if possible (daylight is best light)
  • Never have a bright window behind you - you'll be a silhouette
  • Desk lamp angled from side/above works well if no window
  • Avoid overhead ceiling lights - creates shadows under eyes

🎨 Background advice

  • Plain wall better than messy room
  • Bookshelf is fine (if tidy)
  • Avoid kitchens if possible (too busy/distracting)
  • Make sure nothing weird is visible behind you

⚠️ Common DIY mistakes

  • Webcam balanced on monitor but wobbles when typing
  • Too close to face - looks weird
  • Too far away - you're tiny on screen
  • Forgot to change default camera in video software settings

💡 Pro trick: Do a test call with a friend or record yourself. What looks fine to you in mirror position looks different to others on calls. Check what they actually see.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🎨 Full home office setup? If you need help with desk assembly, monitor arms, cable management as well, do it all together - I'm already there with tools out.

Webcam recommendations - Logitech C920 or C922 (£60-80) is the standard. Logitech Brio 4K (£150) if you want to look really sharp. Built-in laptop cameras are usually rubbish.

Ring lights? Honestly, not necessary for most people. A cheap desk lamp positioned right does the job. Ring lights are for YouTubers and people on camera all day.

In older Exeter houses - Thick stone walls can make USB cable extensions unreliable if you're trying to wall-mount far from your PC. I'll check cable length and signal strength.

Virtual backgrounds - If you're using Zoom's virtual background feature, you still need good lighting and camera position. It doesn't fix a terrible angle!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should a webcam actually be positioned?

Eye level, about arm's length away, centered on your face. Most people have their laptop camera too low (looking up) or their desk webcam wonky on top of the monitor. Proper positioning makes a massive difference to how professional you look on calls.

Can you mount a webcam on the wall?

Yes, if that works better than monitor mounting. Sometimes a wall-mounted webcam on a small arm gives better positioning, especially if you use multiple monitors or a laptop stand. I'll work out what suits your setup best.

Do you help with the lighting and background too?

Yes - camera position is only part of it. I'll advise on where to sit relative to windows (don't have a bright window behind you), suggest a desk lamp position if lighting is rubbish, and help with background if you're on video calls a lot.

Will you test it with my actual video calling software?

Absolutely - I'll test it with Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, whatever you use. Make sure the camera is selected as the default, audio is right, and you can see yourself looking good before I leave.

Can you help me look less terrible on video calls?

Ha - yes. Proper eye-level camera, decent lighting, and a non-distracting background does 90% of it. I'm not a miracle worker, but I can definitely make you look more professional than the current looking-up-your-nose angle most people have.
