The Annual Awning Argument

Every caravan owner knows it. The awning goes up, tempers flare, instructions get thrown, someone storms off. Getting help means your holiday starts relaxed instead of stressed, and you've still got a functioning relationship when it's up.

💡 Pro tip: Awnings are way easier to put up when you're not both tired from driving. Book help, arrive at site, have a cuppa while I sort it.

What to Expect

Step 1: Setup Prep

Caravan needs to be level and stabilized first. Awning rail clean, check we've got all the poles and pegs.

Step 2: Erection

Sliders into rail, frame assembled, fabric attached, whole thing raised into position. This is where experience speeds things up massively.

Step 3: Secure and Tension

Pegged out at correct points, guy ropes attached and tensioned properly. Check it's all solid and won't shift.

🔧 DIY Tips

Putting up your own awning? Here's how to make it less painful:

🔧 What you'll need

  • Your awning (obviously)
  • All poles counted (easy to be short one)
  • Pegs (rock pegs for hard ground, normal for grass)
  • Mallet
  • Helper (seriously - don't solo this)

📐 Setup sequence

  1. Caravan level first: Awning won't go up right if van's wonky
  2. Feed awning rail: Sliders into rail along caravan side
  3. Lay out fabric: On ground where it'll go, right way up
  4. Assemble frame: Follow color coding if poles are marked
  5. Attach to fabric: Poles through sleeves or clips
  6. Raise gradually: Together, smoothly - don't yank
  7. Secure to caravan: Clamps or straps as per design
  8. Peg out corners: Work around methodically
  9. Guy ropes: Tension evenly, not too tight
  10. Final tension: Walk around, adjust pegs and guys

⛺ Air awning differences

  • Inflate gradually: Not all at once
  • Check pressure: Use gauge, don't over-inflate
  • Multiple valves: Inflate all beams, check all hold air
  • Still need pegging: Air poles don't mean no pegs

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Van not level - awning goes up twisted
  • Pulling one side up before the other - stresses fabric
  • Pegs at wrong angle - they'll pull out
  • Guy ropes too tight - tears fabric in wind
  • Not checking rail is clean - fabric catches and tears
  • Forgetting to count poles before starting

💡 Pro trick: Before first use, practice in your garden. Way less stressful than first time on site with people watching.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

End of season? I can help take it down properly - clean, dry, folded right. Stops it going mouldy in storage over winter.

Weather watching: Best erected in calm conditions. If wind's forecast, wait. Awning up in wind is dangerous - fabric acts like a sail.

Muddy pegs: If ground's wet, pegs come up covered in mud. Either clean them before packing (garden hose) or pack separately and clean at home.

Often combined with:

  • Caravan seasonal prep (when arriving on site for season)
  • Caravan cover fitting (if storing van on site)
  • General site setup help

Learning opportunity: I'm happy to talk you through what I'm doing. Next time you might feel confident doing it yourself, or you might decide it's always worth paying someone. Both valid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I pay someone to help with the awning?

Because putting up a full caravan awning is a proper two-person job that takes practice. If you're new to it, if your partner's had enough of the annual awning argument, or if you've got physical limitations, having someone who knows what they're doing saves hours of frustration.

Do you bring the awning or do we provide it?

You provide it - it's yours, goes with your specific caravan. I provide the labor, knowledge, and ability to do it without swearing (much). If you're buying a new awning, I can advise on what's suitable.

How long does it take to set up an awning?

Full awning with someone who knows what they're doing - about an hour. Porch awning - 30 minutes. First time ever - can be 3+ hours of confusion. That's where I save you time and stress.

Can you help take it down as well?

Yes - often taking it down is when people need help most. Getting it clean, dry, and folded properly so it doesn't mildew in storage. Especially useful if weather's turned bad and you're in a rush to leave.

What if it's windy or raining?

Setting up in wind is horrible but I've done it enough to know the technique. Rain depends - happy to help in light rain, but proper downpour means waiting for a break. Taking down in rain is fine - we'll get it down, you can dry it at home.
