EV charger mounted securely to wall - positioned correctly, drilled and fixed properly, cables tidied. Physical installation ready for electrician to connect power.

The Physical Half of EV Charger Installation

You've bought an EV wall charger and someone needs to hang it on your wall properly. This isn't a job for your electrician to do while also doing the electrical work - it's heavy, fiddly drilling, and takes time they could spend on the wiring.

💡 Pro tip: Get the physical mounting done first, then your electrician just does the electrical connection. Saves them time (saves you money) and the charger is mounted properly by someone with the right tools.

What to Expect

Step 1: Site Assessment

I check your wall type, verify it's suitable for heavy fixing, work out optimal position for where you park. Too high and you're stretching, too low and you're bending.

Step 2: Drilling & Mounting

Mark positions, drill neat holes sized for fixings (usually M8 or M10 bolts for EV chargers). Fit expanding bolts or chemical anchors. Mount charger backplate level and secure.

Step 3: Cable Tidy

If your charger has a tethered cable, I'll clip or mount it neatly so it's not dangling everywhere. Makes daily use much nicer and protects the cable.

🔧 DIY Tips

Confident enough to mount your own EV charger? Here's how:

🔧 Tools you'll need

  • Hammer drill with masonry bits
  • Spirit level (long one, 60cm+)
  • Socket set or spanners
  • Wall fixings (M8 or M10 expanding bolts)
  • Cable clips (if tethered charger)

📍 Choosing position

  • Height: usually 1.2-1.5m to charger center
  • Distance: within cable reach of where you park
  • Wall: solid brick or concrete (not plasterboard or timber)
  • Protection: under eaves if possible (keeps rain off)

🔩 Mounting process

  1. Hold charger backplate against wall
  2. Mark mounting holes with pencil
  3. Check level before drilling
  4. Drill holes appropriate depth for fixings
  5. Fit expanding bolts or chemical anchors
  6. Bolt charger backplate securely (usually 4 bolts minimum)
  7. Check level again
  8. Attach charger unit to mounted backplate

⚠️ Common DIY mistakes

  • Not checking wall type first (hollow walls won't hold weight)
  • Positioning too far from parking spot (cable won't reach)
  • Using inadequate fixings (coach screws not strong enough)
  • Not leveling properly (wonky charger forever)
  • Attempting electrical connection yourself (illegal, dangerous)

💡 Pro trick: Mark your usual parking position before positioning the charger. Stand where your car's charge port will be and check cable will reach comfortably. Better to discover it won't reach before drilling holes.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

Electrical connection: This MUST be done by a qualified electrician. EV chargers draw 30-40 amps and need dedicated circuits from your fusebox. DIY electrical work on these is illegal and dangerous.

Wall not suitable? If you've got plasterboard, timber, or thin walls, you'll need a free-standing charger post instead. I can install posts too - they concrete into the ground rather than wall-mounting.

Planning permission? Usually not required for domestic EV chargers, but check with your council if you're in a conservation area or listed building. The charger stays with the house if you sell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do the electrical connection as well?

No - I'm not a qualified electrician. I can mount the charger physically to the wall and tidy cables, but electrical connection to your fusebox must be done by a certified electrician. I can work with your electrician on the same day if you coordinate it.

What's involved in mounting an EV charger?

Finding correct position (near your parking spot, reachable by cable), drilling suitable wall (brick/concrete), mounting charger unit securely and level, cable management for the tethered cable if fitted. Electrical connection is separate - that needs an electrician.

Will you damage my wall?

I drill neat holes sized for the fixings and clean up dust. For brick or concrete it's solid and clean. For render or painted walls I'll be careful but some touch-up might be needed around the mounting plate.

How heavy are EV chargers?

Between 3-10kg depending on model, plus the tethered cable adds weight. They need proper wall fixings into solid masonry - not plasterboard or thin walls. I'll check your wall is suitable before starting.

How long does mounting take?

1.5-2 hours for standard installation on brick wall. Longer if wall is difficult (stone, unusual surface) or if extensive cable tidying is needed. Doesn't include electrical work - that's your electrician's job.
