Garage wall storage installed professionally - tool hooks, bike racks, pegboard, ladder storage all mounted securely. Use your wall space properly.

Use Your Walls

Everything's on the floor taking up space. Bikes leaning in corners, tools in boxes you can't find, garden equipment propped against walls. Meanwhile the walls themselves are bare.

Wall-mounted storage = floor space freed, tools accessible, bikes secure, garage actually usable.

💡 Pro tip: Vertical storage is a game-changer. A few hours fitting wall racks transforms how much you can fit in your garage.

Mounted Right vs Bodged

Why proper fixing matters:

✅ Done Right❌ Bodged
Fixed into studs/solid wallRips out when loaded
Heavy-duty fixingsLightweight screws
Level and positioned rightWonky, awkward to use
Tested before you load itFinds out it's weak when bike falls off

Reality: Bikes and tools are heavier than they look. Needs proper fixings or it's coming straight back down.

🔧 DIY Tips

Fitting wall storage yourself is doable with right approach:

🔧 Tools you'll need

  • Drill and bits (masonry for brick, timber for studs)
  • Stud finder (essential for timber walls)
  • Spirit level
  • Heavy-duty wall plugs and screws
  • Tape measure and pencil
  • The storage items themselves

📐 Planning

  1. Group by use - frequently used stuff at easy height
  2. Heavy items low - don't mount heavy bikes at head height
  3. Clear access - make sure you can actually get things on/off
  4. Measure bikes/tools - check spacing before drilling

🔩 Mounting

  • Brick walls: Use heavy-duty wall plugs
  • Timber frame: MUST find and fix into studs
  • Plasterboard alone: Won't hold weight, needs studs or backing board
  • Always use fixings rated above the weight

⚠️ Common DIY mistakes

  • Not using stud finder (fixing into air)
  • Lightweight fixings for heavy items (pulls out)
  • Mounting too high (can't reach)
  • Not checking behind wall (hit pipes/cables)
  • Not testing before loading (finds out it's weak too late)

💡 Pro trick: Mount one item, test it with the actual thing you're storing, make sure positioning works before drilling more holes. Easy to move pencil marks, much harder to move holes once drilled.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🔧 Stud spacing: Standard stud spacing is 400-600mm. If your bike rack is 300mm wide, it might only hit one stud. You need racks sized to hit two studs, or add backing board.

Weight limits: Heavy-duty wall plugs in solid brick can hold 30-50kg each. Screws into timber studs similar. Check your items' weight and use enough fixings.

Pegboard: Needs to be mounted off the wall slightly (spacers/battens) so hooks can slot in. If you mount it flat to wall, it doesn't work.

Slatwall: Same as pegboard but more heavy-duty. Good for garages. Needs secure mounting though - full panel of tools is heavy.

Bike rack height: Mount high enough to clear floor (bikes are tall) but low enough you can actually lift bike on/off. For most people that's about chest-shoulder height.

Garage door clearance: Make sure wall storage doesn't interfere with up-and-over door mechanism. Check clearances when door is fully open.

Old walls: Exeter's older garages sometimes have crumbly mortar or soft brick. Standard wall plugs might not hold. I'll use appropriate fixings for wall condition.

Loading gradually: Don't immediately load every hook. Test a few items first, make sure fixings hold, then add the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of wall storage do you install?

Pretty much anything - tool hooks, bike racks, pegboard, slatwall, ladder hooks, garden tool holders, whatever you've got. As long as it fixes to walls, I can mount it properly.

Will my garage walls hold heavy items like bikes?

Solid brick/block walls yes, easily. Timber stud walls need fixing into the studs. Plasterboard alone won't hold bikes - needs studs or backing boards. I'll assess your walls and use appropriate fixings.

Do you supply the hooks and racks or do I buy them?

You buy them, I fit them. Gives you choice of what you want. If you want advice on what to get, happy to help - I can tell you what's decent quality and what's rubbish.

How many hooks/racks can you fit in one visit?

Depends what they are. Simple hooks - could do 10-20 in a couple hours. Complex bike racks or slatwall systems take longer. We'll work through your list systematically.

Can you fit storage on all the walls?

Yeah - three walls of storage is totally doable. Just need to make sure you've still got access and room to move around. I'll work with you on positioning that makes sense.
