Location
Exeter, Devon
Workbench built and installed in your garage. Solid timber construction, fixed properly to the wall - a workspace that'll take years of hammering, clamping, and general workshop abuse.
Finally Have Somewhere Decent to Work
Balancing stuff on an old door laid across saw horses gets old fast. A proper workbench transforms your garage from a storage dump into an actual workshop where you can tackle projects properly.
💡 Pro tip: The difference between working on a solid bench versus the garage floor is night and day. Your back will thank you.
What Makes a Good Workbench?
| ✅ Done Right | ❌ Bodge Job |
|---|---|
| Doesn't wobble when you lean on it | Shifts about when you work |
| Height suits how you work | Too high or too low, awkward |
| Big enough to spread tools out | Too small, constantly shuffling stuff |
| Securely fixed to wall | Pulls away under load |

🔧 DIY Tips
Want to build your own? Here's the approach:
🔧 Tools needed
- Saw (circular or hand)
- Drill with wood and masonry bits
- Spirit level (1m minimum)
- Stud finder or detector
- Tape measure and pencil
- Screwdriver
📐 Planning it out
- Decide on height first - around 85-90cm for most people
- Work out how much space you can spare - 60cm deep is standard
- Check where your wall studs are - that's where you'll fix
- Consider what goes underneath - storage or leg room?
🛠️ Construction basics
- Build rear frame fixed to wall (4x2" timber is ideal)
- Add front legs or wall brackets
- Connect with cross-members for strength
- Top with 18mm ply or worktop offcut
- Screw top down into frame
⚠️ Common mistakes
- Fixing to plasterboard instead of studs (pulls out)
- Using thin timber (wobbles under load)
- Building too narrow (tools keep falling off)
- Forgetting to treat timber if garage gets damp
💡 Pro trick: Build it slightly higher than you think - you can always add a rubber mat to stand on if it's too high. Can't do much if it's too low except suffer.
Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.
Good to Know
🔧 Got other garage jobs? Combine the bench fitting with pegboard, wall hooks, or shelving - makes sense to do it all while I'm set up there.
Wall type matters: Brick and block walls are straightforward. Stud walls need careful fixing to the timber frame. Either way, I'll make sure it's solid.
Garage gets damp? Use treated timber for the frame and seal any MDF edges. Stops it swelling when moisture gets in.
Devon garages are rarely square - I measure and build to fit what's actually there, not what the plans say should be there. Old garages especially are often wonky.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's a typical garage workbench size?
Most benches I build are 2-2.5 metres long, about 60cm deep, and 85-90cm high. But it really depends on your space and what you'll use it for. I measure up and build it to suit your garage and how you work.
Can you fit a vice to the workbench?
Yes - I can add mounting points for a vice when building the bench, or fit the vice itself if you've already got one. Just let me know when we're planning the job so I can reinforce that section of the bench.
Do I need to buy the materials first?
Not unless you want to. I can supply all the timber, screws, and fixings needed and include it in the price. Or if you've already bought materials, I'll work with what you've got - just check with me first on sizes.
How strong will it be?
Proper job - you'll be able to hammer on it, clamp things down, and lean your weight on it without any wobble. I build them with solid timber frames and thick tops, fixed securely to the wall. They're built for actual workshop use, not just looking pretty.
Can you add tool storage underneath?
Absolutely. A shelf underneath is simple to add and really useful for storing power tools or paint tins. We can also add pegboard on the wall above, drawers, or whatever storage works for you.
