🔧 DIY Tips

Washing machines and dryers? Fine to DIY if you're confident. Built-in electric cookers? Really shouldn't mess with those yourself.

🔧 For a washing machine:

You'll need:

  • Adjustable spanner or pliers
  • Bucket and old towels
  • Bowl to catch water from hoses

📐 The process:

  1. Turn off both tap isolators behind the machine (turn clockwise)
  2. Unplug from the electric socket
  3. Have bucket ready - unscrew fill hose from tap (water will dribble out)
  4. Pull machine forward enough to reach the drain hose
  5. Lower drain hose into bucket to drain any water left in machine
  6. Disconnect drain hose from waste pipe
  7. Keep hoses with the machine (you'll need them)

⚠️ Common mistakes:

  • Not turning taps off - water everywhere when you disconnect
  • Losing the hoses - you need them for the new house
  • Not draining the machine - it's heavy and tips water everywhere in the van
  • Seized isolator valves (common in old houses) - don't force them, they'll crack

💡 Pro trick: Put the hoses and power cable inside the drum for transport. Stops them getting lost and protects them from damage.

For electric cookers: Don't. Seriously. It's a 30-40 amp connection on its own circuit - get it wrong and you could kill yourself or burn your house down. Worth paying someone who knows what they're doing.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🏠 Moving house package? I can disconnect at your old place, help with the move itself if needed (especially heavy appliances or awkward stairs), then reconnect everything at your new place. One person who knows your appliances = less stress.

Seized valves? Really common in Exeter's older properties. If I can't free them safely, I'll let you know and can fit new ones - better than finding out when the removal van's waiting.

Integrated appliances? Those built-in dishwashers and washing machines often need releasing from worktop fixings too - I'll sort that so the removal men can actually get them out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you disconnect a built-in electric oven?

Yes - I'll isolate the power at the cooker switch, disconnect it from the connection plate behind, and cap off the wiring safely. Your electrician or I can then reconnect it at your new place.

What about the washing machine - do you deal with the water?

Absolutely. I shut off the valves, disconnect the hoses, and make sure everything's drained so you don't flood the removal van. The valves get left capped so no water leaks while the house is empty.

Do I need to do anything before you arrive?

Just make sure there's clear access to the appliance. If it's a washing machine, run it empty the night before so it's not full of water. That's about it.

Will my appliances be ready to just plug in at the new house?

Depends on the appliance. Washing machine - yes, just reconnect. Electric oven - needs an electrician or someone like me to wire it back to the connection plate. I can do both ends of the move if you like.

How long does disconnecting take?

Single appliance is usually 20-30 minutes. Most people get multiple things done in one visit - washer, dryer, dishwasher, cooker - so I'm usually there about an hour for a typical house.
