That Thing Took Days To Build...

Your kids' climbing frame has been in the garden for years, but it's coming with you to the new house. Problem is, it took you and a mate a whole weekend to build, it's massive, and you're not sure it even comes apart properly.

Professional disassembly means it's taken down safely, all the parts are labeled so you know what goes where, and it's ready to rebuild at the other end.

💡 Pro tip: Take photos during disassembly (or get me to). Visual record of how it went together makes reassembly much easier.

  • Access to your garden

Rough guide:

🔧 DIY Tips

Fancy tackling it yourself? Here's what you need to know:

🔧 Essential equipment:

  • Socket set (multiple sizes - climbing frames use various bolt sizes)
  • Adjustable spanners
  • Allen keys (hex keys) - often needed
  • Cordless drill/driver
  • Step ladder
  • Helper (seriously, don't do this alone)
  • Lots of bags for fixings
  • Marker pen for labeling
  • Phone for photos

📐 Safe disassembly approach:

Before you start:

  1. Take overview photos from all angles
  2. Remove all accessories (swings, slide, anything detachable)
  3. Work out the reverse order of assembly (usually top-down)
  4. Have somewhere to stack parts as they come off

During disassembly: 5. Start at the top, work down (prevents instability) 6. Support sections before removing last fixings (they're heavier than you think) 7. Bag and label fixings IMMEDIATELY - "tower to bridge bolts," "swing beam fixings," etc. 8. Take photos at each stage 9. Number parts if they're similar (beam 1, beam 2, etc.) 10. Don't force seized bolts - penetrating oil and patience

⚠️ Safety warnings:

  • These are heavy and awkward - need two people minimum
  • Parts can fall when last bolt comes out - support them
  • Some have tension (roof sections, monkey bars) - release carefully
  • Wooden splinters common - wear gloves
  • Bolts often rusted/seized - forcing them strips threads

💡 Pro trick: Use a permanent marker to write on wooden parts - "Front left support," "Top beam tower A," etc. Photos are good, but labels on the actual parts are better when you're rebuilding in six months.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🏠 Full moving service? I can disassemble at your old place, transport it, then reassemble at your new house. One person who knows how it came apart = easier rebuild.

Not all frames disassemble: Cheap metal frames are sometimes welded, not bolted. If it doesn't come apart, I'll tell you before we start and you can decide whether to leave it or cut it up for scrap.

Timber frames last: Quality wooden climbing frames (TP Toys, Wickey, Selwood, etc.) are built to disassemble and reassemble. Worth moving if you paid good money for them.

New garden might need groundwork: Climbing frames need level ground and anchoring. Your new garden might need some prep before reassembly - I can advise or help with that too.

Exeter properties: Lots of Exeter houses have narrow side access or gardens only accessible through the house. Plan the removal route before disassembly - might affect how we break it down.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can climbing frames be taken apart and rebuilt?

Most can, yes - especially wooden ones from places like TP Toys or Wickey. Metal frames vary - some are bolted together (fine), others are welded (can't disassemble). I'll advise honestly once I see what you've got.

Will it go back together the same at the new house?

If it's been properly labeled during disassembly, yes. I bag and label all fixings by section, take photos as I go, and note which piece goes where. Makes reassembly much easier at the other end.

Do I need to do anything before you arrive?

Just make sure there's clear access to the climbing frame. If it's a big one, I might need to bring parts through your house or side gate - just let me know the access situation when you book.

How long does disassembly take?

Depends massively on size and complexity. Small single-swing frame might be 2-3 hours. Big multi-level tower with slide, swings, climbing wall could be a full day. I'll estimate once I know what you've got.

Can you take it away if we're not moving it?

Yes - if you're not taking it to your new place, I can dismantle and take it away for disposal or recycling. Saves you listing it on Facebook Marketplace or leaving it for the new owners.
