When Furniture Needs Taking Apart

Sometimes furniture just needs to come apart. Moving house and it won't fit through doors. Getting rid of it but can't get it out of the room. Redecorating and it's in the way. Whatever the reason, dismantling it properly makes everything easier.

💡 Pro tip: Council bulky waste won't take fully-built wardrobes in some areas. Dismantle it first and suddenly it's just "timber" they'll collect.

Why Not Just Smash It Apart?

Because you might want to use it again. Or sell it. Or at least get it through the door without wrecking your walls.

🔧 DIY Tips

Want to tackle dismantling yourself? Here's how:

🔧 Tools you'll need

  • Cordless drill/driver
  • Set of Allen keys (hex keys)
  • Screwdrivers (Phillips and flat-head)
  • Mallet or rubber hammer
  • Zip-lock bags for fixings
  • Marker pen for labelling

📦 Dismantling sequence

  1. Empty the furniture completely
  2. Remove doors first (easier to work on)
  3. Take out shelves and internal components
  4. Work on the main structure last
  5. Bag fixings from each stage separately
  6. Label everything as you go

⚠️ Common DIY mistakes

  • Forcing stuck screws (use WD-40 and wait)
  • Not supporting panels as you remove the last screw
  • Mixing up fixings from different pieces
  • Trying to do it single-handed when you need two people
  • Leaving cam-lock fixings installed (they fall out and get lost)

💡 Pro trick: Take photos with your phone as you go. When you rebuild (or someone else does), those photos are worth gold.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

📦 Need it removed too? I can take dismantled furniture to the tip for an extra fee. Much cheaper than hiring a van yourself.

Planning to rebuild elsewhere? Make sure I bag and label everything properly. Costs nothing extra and saves hours of head-scratching later.

Cheap old flat-pack? Some budget furniture from years ago doesn't dismantle well - the board crumbles where screws go in. I'll check before starting and advise if it's risky.

Frequently Asked Questions

What furniture can you dismantle?

Anything that was built can be taken apart - wardrobes, bed frames, desks, bookcases, dining tables, flat-pack furniture. If it's got screws or fixings, I can dismantle it. Just let me know what you've got.

Why would I need furniture dismantled?

Usually for house moves (won't fit through doors when built), getting rid of old furniture (easier to dispose when in pieces), or making space for decorating. Sometimes people want to store furniture and it's easier dismantled.

What happens to the screws and fixings?

All bagged up and either taped to the furniture piece they belong to, or put in a labelled bag I leave with you. If you're disposing of the furniture I'll take the fixings away with me.

Can you dismantle really old furniture?

Yes, but I'll check it first. Some really cheap old flat-pack has particle board that's degraded - the screws strip out and it won't go back together. I'll advise if I think there's a risk before starting.

Do you remove the dismantled furniture too?

Not as standard - this is just the dismantling. But if you want it removed I can usually take it to the tip for an extra fee, or you can book a separate removal job.
