Price Guide

£60-£260

Location

Exeter, Devon

Van plus driver for furniture collections, small moves, deliveries, or tip runs. More helpful than van hire (I do the heavy lifting), cheaper than a full removal company for smaller jobs.

When You Need A Van But Not A Removal Company

Bought a sofa from Facebook Marketplace? Need to move a few things to your new flat? Got a van-load of rubbish for the tip? You don't need a full removal company with three guys and a massive lorry.

You just need someone with a van who'll help you load, drive carefully, and help you unload. That's this.

💡 Pro tip: Man and van is perfect for second-hand furniture collections. Seller doesn't deliver, courier quotes are mental, but I can collect it same day usually.

What to Expect

Step 1: Book & Confirm

Tell me what you're moving/collecting, where from, where to. I'll confirm it fits in the van and give you a time estimate and price.

Step 2: Collection

I arrive at the collection point, we load everything carefully (protecting furniture with blankets if needed), secure it all properly in the van.

Step 3: Delivery & Unload

Drive to your address, unload everything, carry it where you want it (room placement, garage, whatever). Job done, you pay, I leave.

🔧 DIY Tips

Thinking of hiring a van yourself? Here's what to know:

🔧 What you're taking on

  • Driving a bigger vehicle than you're used to
  • Loading and unloading solo (or with inexperienced mates)
  • Finding somewhere to hire the van
  • Fuel costs on top of hire
  • Damage liability if you hit something

📐 Van hire costs

  • Half day hire: ~£40-60 plus fuel
  • Full day hire: ~£60-100 plus fuel
  • Insurance excess if you damage it: £500-1000
  • Your time loading/unloading: however long it takes

✂️ If you do hire a van

  • Get the biggest van you think you need (always takes more space than you expect)
  • Use blankets and straps to protect and secure items
  • Heavy items low down, light items on top
  • Don't overload it beyond weight limit
  • Check insurance excess before you sign

⚠️ Common DIY mistakes

  • Underestimating van size needed (makes two trips)
  • Not securing items (everything slides around and gets damaged)
  • Assuming you can lift a wardrobe on your own (you can't)
  • Forgetting about fuel costs
  • Damaging the hire van and facing big excess

💡 Pro trick: If the job will take you 4+ hours DIY, factor in van hire, fuel, your time, and potential damage - often it's cheaper and less stressful to just book a man and van.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🚚 Not a full house move: If you're moving an entire house, you want a proper removal company with insurance and a bigger van. This service is for smaller jobs - single items, small flats, collections, that kind of thing.

Assembling furniture: If what I'm collecting needs assembling when I deliver it (flatpack, IKEA stuff), I can do that too. Just let me know when booking so I allow time.

Tip charges: Some recycling centres charge for certain items (mattresses, tyres, plasterboard, etc.). Those fees are on top of my time. I'll warn you beforehand if I think there'll be charges.

Same-day service: If I've got availability and it's a simple job, I can often do same-day collections. Worth calling if you need something moved urgently.

Multiple stops: Need to collect from three different places then deliver to two addresses? That's fine, just tell me the route and I'll work out timing. More stops = more time, but it's doable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's included in man and van?

Me, my van, and help loading and unloading. If you've bought furniture that needs collecting, moving between houses, taking stuff to the tip, whatever needs moving - that's what this is for. Not a full house move (get proper movers for that) but perfect for smaller jobs.

How big is your van?

Standard long-wheelbase van - fits a sofa, wardrobe, chest of drawers, plus boxes. Not massive but enough for most single-item collections or small moves. If you've got a three-piece suite and a king size bed, we might need two trips or you need a bigger van.

Can you collect from IKEA/furniture shops?

Yep - people do this all the time. You buy the furniture, I collect it and deliver to your house. Much cheaper than the shop's delivery and you get it same day usually. I can help carry it in too if you need.

Do you do rubbish clearance to the tip?

Yes - if you've got stuff that needs taking to the recycling centre (old furniture, garden waste, DIY rubble), I can load it and take it. You pay for the van time plus any tip fees if there are charges for certain items.

How far will you travel?

Exeter and 30-mile radius is standard. Further is possible but you're paying for the drive time both ways. For long distances it might be cheaper to hire a van yourself, depends on the job.
