Washing line installed properly in your new garden. Posts set secure, line tensioned right, won't sag when loaded with wet washing.
Get Your Washing Line Up First
Moved into the new place and the tumble dryer's broken, it's a lovely sunny day, and you've got nowhere to hang washing. Hotels are expensive and you need that washing line sorted.
I'll get it installed properly - posts dug in deep and set in concrete, line at the right height and tension. Whether it's a rotary dryer or traditional post-to-post line, it'll be solid and ready for immediate use.
💡 Pro tip: Washing lines are often an afterthought when moving, but they're actually really useful to get sorted early. Fresh air drying saves money on tumble dryers and nothing smells better than line-dried sheets.

🔧 DIY Tips
Attempting it yourself? Here's the approach:
🔧 Tools you'll need
- Spade or post hole digger
- Spirit level (essential)
- Concrete or postcrete
- Bucket for mixing (if using concrete)
- String line for alignment
📐 Installation steps
- Mark post positions (measure twice!)
- Dig holes minimum 2ft deep, 9-12 inches diameter
- Set first post in hole with concrete
- Use spirit level to get it plumb
- Set second post, check alignment with first
- Leave to set (24hrs for concrete, 1hr for postcrete)
- Fit and tension line
⚠️ Common DIY mistakes
- Holes too shallow (posts lean over with weight)
- Posts not plumb (washing line looks terrible)
- Not leaving concrete to set before tensioning
- Wrong spacing for line type
💡 Pro trick: When setting posts, use temporary wooden braces to hold them plumb while concrete sets. Much easier than trying to hold them steady yourself for an hour while postcrete goes off.
Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.
Good to Know
🌤️ Sunny spot? Position washing lines where they'll get good sun and breeze. Avoid shaded corners - washing takes forever to dry there.
Rotary vs traditional? Rotary dryers are great for small gardens and give loads of line length. Traditional post-to-post lines look nicer and are easier to maintain, but need more garden space.
Old washing line at previous house? Rotary dryers can be moved if the socket is undamaged. Traditional post-to-post lines don't usually transplant well - just get a new one installed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to provide the washing line or can you supply it?
Either way. If you've already bought one, I'll fit it. If not, I can advise on what type suits your garden and get one for you. Rotary dryers are popular but traditional post-to-post lines are solid if you've got the space.
How deep do the posts need to go?
Posts need to be about 2ft in the ground to stay solid when loaded with wet washing. I'll dig proper holes, set them in concrete or postcrete, and make sure they're plumb and at the right height.
Can you move an existing washing line from my old house?
If it's a rotary dryer with a socket, yes - I can dig it out and reinstall in your new garden. Traditional post-to-post lines don't usually transplant well - posts get damaged coming out and concrete footings make them difficult to extract.
What if the ground's really hard or rocky?
Devon soil can be brutal - clay, rock, old hardcore. I've got the tools to deal with it. Might take a bit longer if I'm hitting bedrock, but I'll get it sorted. I'll let you know if it's going to add time.
How long before I can use it?
If posts are set in postcrete, you can use it the same day. If I've used regular concrete, best to leave it 24 hours to set properly before loading it with heavy wet washing.
