We've assembled hundreds of IKEA pieces over the years. Here's what we've learned about getting it done right - and without throwing an Allen key across the room.
Before You Start
1. Check Everything First
Before you even think about picking up a screwdriver:
- Count all the parts against the inventory list
- Check for damage - especially on visible surfaces
- Identify similar-looking pieces - IKEA loves parts that look identical but aren't
Missing a part? IKEA will send replacements free. Damaged? Take it back. Don't discover these problems halfway through assembly.
2. Clear Your Space
You need more room than you think. A PAX wardrobe needs about 3x2 metres of clear floor space to build comfortably. Trying to squeeze into a corner just makes everything harder.
3. Get the Right Tools Ready
IKEA includes tools, but they're rubbish. You'll want:
- Electric screwdriver/drill - game changer for cam locks
- Rubber mallet - for tapping dowels without damage
- Spirit level - especially for wall-mounted items
- Pencil - for marking
Assembly Tips That Actually Help
Read the Instructions (Properly)
I know, obvious. But here's the thing - don't just glance at each step. Before you start, flip through the entire manual. Understanding where you're heading prevents mistakes.
Don't Fully Tighten Until the End
This is the big one. Leave all screws and cam locks slightly loose until the piece is fully assembled. Then go back and tighten everything. This gives you wiggle room to align panels properly.
The Two-Person Rule
Some items genuinely need two people:
- PAX wardrobes (standing them up)
- MALM chest of drawers (heavy!)
- Anything wall-mounted
- Large desks like BEKANT
Don't be a hero. Ask for help or you'll end up with scratched floors and a sore back.
Watch the Wood Grain
On pieces like HEMNES, the wood grain direction matters for appearance. Check you haven't got a side panel upside down before you attach it.
Common IKEA Assembly Mistakes
| Mistake | Why It Happens | How to Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Panels on wrong side | Left/right confusion | Lay everything out first |
| Cam locks stripped | Over-tightening | Stop when snug |
| Wobbly result | Skipped steps | Use ALL the fixings provided |
| Drawers don't align | Rushing | Take your time on runners |
| Back panel bulging | Wrong orientation | Textured side faces inward |
The Tricky IKEA Items
Some pieces have a reputation for being difficult:
PAX Wardrobes
The frames aren't bad, but the doors are fiddly. Rail systems especially. Budget twice as long as you think.
MALM Drawers
Heavy and the runners need precision. The 6-drawer is a two-person job, no question.
HEMNES
Looks lovely but has more parts than you'd expect. That traditional style means more complex assembly.
BRIMNES (with storage)
Bed frames with storage drawers underneath are notorious. Clear a whole afternoon.
When to Call a Professional
Be honest with yourself. Consider getting help if:
- You don't have the right tools
- The item is very heavy (wardrobes, bed frames)
- It needs wall mounting on masonry
- Time is more valuable than money
- You've already tried and it's gone wrong
We charge from £60 for furniture assembly - often less time and stress than doing it yourself. See our flat pack assembly prices guide for more details.
Quick Wins
- Drawer fronts - attach loosely, align perfectly, then tighten
- Soft-close hinges - adjust the screws for perfect closing
- Legs/feet - wind all the way in, then back out to level
- Glass doors - handle by edges only, fingerprints show everything
