TV Wall Mounting Costs: What Affects the Price?

The question I get asked most: "How much to mount my TV?" The honest answer is it depends - but here's what affects the price.

Average TV Mounting Costs

ServiceTypical Price
Basic mounting (bracket only)£60-£90
Mount + cable hide (surface)£85-£130
Mount + cable hide (in-wall)£120-£200
Above fireplace (brick)£90-£150
Full install with soundbar£130-£200

These are Exeter-area prices for 2025. London and the South East are typically higher.

What Affects the Price

1. Wall Type

This is the biggest factor.

Plasterboard (stud wall):

  • Need to find studs or use heavy-duty fixings
  • May need backing board if no studs in the right place
  • Usually quicker if studs are accessible

Brick:

  • Straightforward drilling
  • Standard job

Stone:

  • Harder to drill
  • Takes longer
  • May need specialist fixings

Concrete:

  • Hard on drill bits
  • Takes longer

Above a fireplace:

  • Often has a lintel (hard concrete)
  • May have flue or chimney breast to consider
  • Usually costs more

2. Bracket Type

Fixed bracket: TV sits flat to wall, no movement. Cheapest option.

Tilt bracket: TV angles down slightly. Good for higher mounting.

Full motion/articulating: Swings out, tilts, swivels. Most expensive but most flexible.

Most handymen include the mounting labour; you supply the bracket. If you want us to supply it, add £20-£80 depending on type.

3. Cable Management

This is where costs vary most.

No cable hide:

  • Cables hang visible
  • Cheapest option
  • Looks messy

Surface trunking:

  • Plastic channel runs down wall
  • Paint-matchable
  • Quick to fit
  • Looks okay

In-wall cable hide:

  • Cables hidden in wall
  • Needs two holes and wall fishing
  • Looks cleanest
  • Takes longer

Chasing cables into wall:

  • Channel cut into plaster
  • Then plastered over
  • Most invisible
  • Takes longest, makes mess

4. Height and Position

Standard height (eye level from sofa):

  • Easy to work on
  • Quick

High mounting:

  • May need scaffolding or tall ladders
  • Takes longer
  • Safety consideration

Corner mounting:

  • Specialist brackets needed
  • More complex fitting

Awkward access:

  • Behind furniture
  • Narrow spaces
  • Adds time

5. Additional Work

Things that add to the cost:

  • Running HDMI/aerial cables to other locations
  • Fitting Sky box on wall shelf
  • Sound bar mounting
  • Adding extra sockets
  • Hiding cables in a chimney breast (complex)

What's Included in a Quote

A good TV mounting quote should include:

  • Bracket fitting (you provide bracket)
  • All fixings for your wall type
  • Basic cable management (at minimum, tidying)
  • Checking it's secure and level
  • Testing TV works
  • Cleanup

Ask about:

  • Whether they've seen your wall type before
  • What happens if fixings don't work
  • If cable hide is included or extra

DIY vs Professional

DIY costs:

  • Bracket: £20-£80
  • Fixings: £5-£15 (if you need extras)
  • Your time: Several hours first time

DIY challenges:

  • Finding wall studs or choosing right fixings
  • Getting it level
  • Managing weight safely (TVs are heavier than they look)
  • Cable management
  • Knowing if the wall can take it

When to hire:

  • Above a fireplace
  • Stone or unknown wall type
  • Heavy TV (55"+)
  • You want it done right first time

How to Save Money

  1. Supply your own bracket - Buy online, it's usually cheaper
  2. Basic cable management - Surface trunking is much cheaper than in-wall
  3. Standard height, easy access - Don't make it complicated
  4. Bundle with other jobs - Multiple small jobs = better value

Red Flags When Getting Quotes

Watch out for:

  • Won't quote without seeing TV (unusual for straightforward jobs)
  • No mention of wall type
  • Unclear what's included
  • No reviews or portfolio

Good signs:

  • Asks about your wall type
  • Specifies what's included
  • Has photos of previous work
  • Clear pricing
