Professional carpet fitting with proper stretching, gripper installation, and neat finishing. Your new carpet fitted right so it looks good and lasts.

Fitting carpet properly isn't just about rolling it out and trimming the edges. It needs stretching tight, grippers fitted all around the edges, and careful tucking under skirting boards and into doorways. Do it wrong and you'll have wrinkles, loose edges, and a carpet that wears out faster than it should.

What Proper Carpet Fitting Involves

Gripper Rod Installation - We fit gripper rods around the perimeter of the room. These hold the carpet edges taut and stop it shifting over time.

Underlay Fitting - Good underlay makes your carpet feel better underfoot and extends its life. We'll fit it flat with no gaps or overlaps.

Carpet Stretching - Using a knee kicker and power stretcher, we pull the carpet tight across the room. This removes wrinkles and ensures it doesn't ruck up when you walk on it.

Edge Trimming and Tucking - Edges get trimmed to size and tucked neatly under skirting boards. Doorway joins are cut clean and finished with threshold strips where needed.

Pricing depends on room size, complexity (stairs, alcoves, bay windows), and how much furniture needs moving. We'll give you a fixed price quote before starting.

Pro Tip: Don't skimp on underlay. A good underlay makes cheaper carpet feel more expensive and extends the life of pricey carpet. Worth every penny.

🔧 DIY Tips

Tools You'll Need:

  • Knee kicker (hire from tool shop)
  • Carpet trimmer or sharp utility knife
  • Gripper rods and tacks
  • Hammer and bolster chisel
  • Tape measure and chalk line

How to DIY:

  1. Fit grippers - Nail gripper rods around the room perimeter, about 10mm from the skirting board. Teeth should point towards the wall.
  2. Lay underlay - Unroll underlay, trim to fit between grippers, and tape joins. Rubber side down if it's foam-backed.
  3. Rough-cut carpet - Unroll carpet in the room with about 100mm excess on all sides. Align pattern if applicable.
  4. Stretch and hook - Use a knee kicker to hook one edge onto grippers, then work across the room pulling it tight. A power stretcher is better for big rooms but costs more to hire.
  5. Trim and tuck - Trim excess carpet to about 20mm, then use a bolster chisel to tuck edges down between gripper and skirting.

Common DIY Mistakes:

  • Not stretching tight enough (carpet develops wrinkles within weeks)
  • Cutting carpet too short (gaps at edges, can't tuck properly)
  • Grippers too close or too far from skirting (carpet won't tuck or stay hooked)

Pro Trick: Always stretch from the centre of the room outwards towards the edges. Stops carpet bunching up in corners.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to supply the carpet or can you source it?

Either works. Most people buy their own carpet from retailers, and we fit it. But if you want help sourcing the right carpet, we can advise on local suppliers or even sort it for you.

How long does carpet fitting take?

A standard bedroom usually takes 2-3 hours. A living room might be 3-4 hours, depending on size and how much furniture needs moving. We'll give you a time estimate when we quote.

Do you move furniture?

We can move light to medium furniture as part of the job. Really heavy items like wardrobes or piano might need emptying first. If you're not sure, just ask when we quote.

Can you fit carpet on stairs?

Yes, stairs are no problem. They take a bit longer because of the cutting and tucking involved, but we've done hundreds of staircases. Costs a bit more than flat areas due to the extra time.
