LVT (luxury vinyl tile) flooring installation for kitchens, bathrooms, living areas. Waterproof, durable, professional fitting.

The Tough, Waterproof Floor That Looks Like the Real Thing

LVT flooring has come a long way from dodgy vinyl tiles. Modern luxury vinyl planks and tiles look bloody convincing - realistic wood grain or stone effects - but they're 100% waterproof and tougher than laminate. They're perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, anywhere that takes a beating or might get wet.

💡 Pro tip: For bathrooms and kitchens, go for rigid core LVT rather than flexible vinyl. It's more stable, feels more solid underfoot, and handles temperature changes better.

What to Expect

Step 1: Subfloor Check

LVT is less forgiving than laminate - any bumps or dips in the subfloor will show through. I'll check it's level and sort any issues first.

Step 2: Acclimatise & Plan

The LVT needs 48 hours in the room first. While that's happening, I'll work out the best layout to minimise cuts and wastage.

Step 3: Fitting

I'll lay underlay (if using click LVT), then work across the room plank by plank. For glue-down LVT, I'll apply adhesive in sections and bed planks down firmly.

Step 4: Finishing

Once the floor is down, I'll fit scotia around edges, door bars at transitions, and make sure all cuts around pipes and obstacles are neat.

🔧 DIY Tips

LVT installation is similar to laminate but needs a bit more care with subfloor prep:

🔧 What you'll need

  • LVT planks (room size + 10% wastage)
  • Underlay (for click LVT) or adhesive (for glue-down)
  • Spacers (8-10mm)
  • Pull bar and tapping block
  • Sharp utility knife or jigsaw
  • Tape measure and pencil

📐 How to do it

  1. Make sure subfloor is absolutely level - LVT will telegraph every imperfection
  2. Lay underlay if using click LVT, or mark out adhesive sections for glue-down
  3. Start in a corner with spacers at walls for expansion gap
  4. Click planks together (or bed into adhesive), tapping gently to close seams
  5. Stagger joints by at least 15cm for stability

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Not levelling the subfloor properly - you'll see every bump
  • Forgetting expansion gaps - vinyl expands less than laminate but still needs space
  • Cutting planks with a blunt blade - you'll get ragged edges
  • Walking on glue-down LVT before adhesive is set - you'll move the planks

💡 Pro trick: For cutting LVT, score deeply with a sharp knife and snap along the line. It's quicker than a saw and gives a cleaner edge. Save the jigsaw for curves and cutouts.

Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Good to Know

🔧 Glue-down vs click: Click LVT is faster to install and easier to remove if needed. Glue-down is more stable and better for commercial spaces or very large areas. For most domestic jobs, click LVT is the way to go.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between LVT and laminate?

LVT is vinyl-based and completely waterproof, so it's perfect for bathrooms, kitchens, and utility rooms. Laminate is wood-based and will swell if it gets properly wet. LVT is also more flexible and warmer underfoot. Both click together in similar ways, but LVT is the better choice for wet areas.

Can LVT go over underfloor heating?

Yeah, most LVT is fine over underfloor heating - check the manufacturer's specs to be sure. You just need to make sure the subfloor is level and the heating is turned off for 48 hours before and after installation so the adhesive (if using glue-down) can set properly.

Does LVT need to acclimatise before fitting?

Yes, 48 hours in the room where it's being fitted. It needs to adjust to the temperature and humidity. If you skip this step, the planks might expand or contract after installation and you'll get gaps or buckling.

Is LVT noisy underfoot compared to carpet?

It's harder than carpet, so you'll hear footsteps more - especially upstairs. Good quality underlay helps a lot with noise and makes it more comfortable to walk on. For upstairs rooms, I'd always recommend acoustic underlay to keep the noise down.
