Professional stair gate fitting at top of stairs - wall-mounted for safety, opening away from the drop. Secure installation that won't fail.
Top of Stairs is Different
Pressure-fit gates are not safe at the top. A child pushing against a pressure-fit gate at the top of stairs is a fall waiting to happen. Wall-mounted only, no exceptions.
💡 Pro tip: The gate must open away from the stairs. A gate that swings out over the drop creates its own hazard. Check this before buying.
Why Wall-Mounting Matters
| ✅ Wall-Mounted | ❌ Pressure-Fit |
|---|---|
| Can't be pushed out | Can be dislodged |
| Secure anchor | Relies on friction |
| Tested at top | Bottom only rating |
| Opens correctly | May swing wrong way |

🔧 DIY Tips
Fitting top-of-stairs gate yourself? Here's what's critical:
🔧 What you'll need
- Top-of-stairs rated gate
- Drill and wall plugs
- Stud finder
- Level
- Screwdriver
📐 Critical points
- MUST be wall-mounted (not pressure-fit)
- Gate MUST open away from stairs
- Find studs or use proper fixings
- Check latch is child-resistant
- No gaps a child could squeeze through
⚠️ Common mistakes
- Using pressure-fit at top (dangerous)
- Gate opening toward stairs
- Fixing into plasterboard only
- Gaps at sides or bottom
- Gate too low (can climb over)
💡 Pro trick: If width is awkward, extension panels are available for most gates. Better than bodging with a wrong-size gate.
Rather leave it to a pro? No problem - that's what I'm here for. Give me a call.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the top of stairs different?
Pressure-fit gates can be pushed out - dangerous at the top when a fall means going down stairs. Top-of-stairs gates must be wall-mounted and open away from the stairs.
Can any gate go at the top?
No - only use gates specifically rated for top-of-stairs. They open away from the drop, have better latches, and must be wall-mounted. Don't use pressure-fit gates at the top.
What if the wall is plasterboard?
We find the studs for solid fixing, or use specialist plasterboard fixings rated for the load. A gate that pulls out of the wall is worse than no gate.
Can it work with a bannister?
Yes - special bannister adaptor kits exist. We can fit to bannisters on one side and wall on the other if needed.
