What if the leak only happens in heavy rain?
That's common - light rain doesn't get driven into the small gaps where water's entering. I'll still find it. The damage and water stains tell the story even when it's dry outside.
How do I know if my soffits need replacing?
Soft, rotten wood when you press it, peeling paint that won't stay on, gaps where birds are getting in, or visible daylight through holes. On older houses, if they're original timber, they're probably due for replacement after 30-40 years.
Why do I need a chimney cap if I don't use the fireplace?
Rain coming down the chimney can soak the chimney breast, cause damp patches inside, and ruin your decorating. Birds love nesting in unused chimneys too. A cap stops all that while still letting the chimney breathe.
Can you fit a cap on a chimney that's been partially taken down?
Yes - if the stack's been reduced to just above roof level, we can cap it with a flat capping stone or formed lead cover. Common on older Exeter properties where chimneys have been lowered.
What actually is a bargeboard?
It's the board that runs along the gable end of your roof - the triangular bit at the side of the house. It protects the ends of your roof timbers and looks neat. When it rots, water starts getting into the roof structure itself.
