How do you stop rabbits digging under the fence?
The wire needs to go underground - I bury at least 150mm, turned outward at 90 degrees. Rabbits dig down and hit the wire before they get under. It's the only way that actually works long-term.
How do you price fence installation?
Per metre, typically £80-£120/m depending on fence type, ground conditions, and access. That's labour and standard materials. I'll measure up, discuss what you want, and give you an exact quote before starting. No surprises.
Can you fix a gate that's dropped and scraping the ground?
Yeah, that's bread and butter stuff. Usually it's the hinges or posts that need attention. Takes about an hour to get it swinging properly again. I'll adjust the hinges, reinforce the post if needed, and make sure it opens and closes smoothly.
What's the difference between cheap and decent trellis?
Cheap trellis uses thin battens and staples - it falls apart in a year or two. Decent trellis has proper thickness, screwed or nailed joints, and pressure-treated timber. It costs a bit more but lasts five times longer. I can supply either, but I'll always recommend the better stuff.
Can you match existing fencing style?
Usually yes. If you're extending an existing run, I'll match the wire gauge, mesh size, and post spacing. Bring a photo if you're not sure what you've got - helps me quote accurately and bring the right materials.
How long does a fence last in Devon weather?
Depends on the timber and treatment. Pressure-treated posts and panels should give you 15-20 years if they're installed properly. Cheap untreated timber won't make 5 years. Ground contact is where most fencing fails - that's why post depth and drainage matter.
