Common Questions About Fencing
What's the difference between chicken wire and welded mesh?
Chicken wire is the twisted hexagonal stuff - cheap and fine for chickens, but foxes can tear it. Welded mesh is square grid wire with joints welded - much stronger and better for anything that needs to be predator-proof. I usually recommend welded mesh for the bottom half at least.
What's the difference between picket fencing and palisade fencing?
Same basic idea - vertical boards on rails - but pickets are usually shorter (0.9-1.2m), decorative, pointed or rounded tops. Palisade is taller (1.5-1.8m), closer-spaced, more for security than looks. We install both, depends what you need.
Do I need to sort out the boundary first?
Yes - you need to know where your boundary actually is before we install. If there's any doubt, get it checked. I won't install a fence that might be on someone else's land. Once you're clear on the line, I'll work to that.
Can you match existing post and rail fencing?
We'll do our best to match style, height, and spacing. New timber won't match the colour of weathered fencing straight away - it'll grey naturally over 6-12 months. If exact matching matters, we can discuss staining options, but that adds cost and maintenance.
What's the difference between timber and concrete gravel boards?
Concrete lasts longer (20+ years vs 10-15 for timber) but costs more and is heavier to fit. Timber's cheaper, easier to cut to size, and easier to replace later. For most domestic fencing, treated timber gravel boards are fine and better value. We fit both.
Do you supply the latch or should I buy one?
I carry common types in the van. If you want something specific (lockable, decorative, etc.), send me a photo and I'll grab it before coming out. Either way works - your choice.
